1963 Rat Beetle -SOLD- Beryl Green, lowered, whitewalls

Rego: CZA-572
Location: Sutherland Shire, NSW
Contact: Ashley 0422 972 257
Rego: 7th May 2007
Price: was $2500, now down to $1950

I purchased the beetle off this forum approximately a year and 2 months ago. It was previously owned by Isaac
(its13b) he was a DNVK member, it still wears its sticker.

It has been my daily driver since then, its copped the worst of Southern Sydneys traffic with nary a complaint. It has been a very trusty vehicle. I hate to have to sell it, i love this car. Unfortunately it just isn't suitable for my new family (3 month old son). It doesn't deserve to sit idle in a garage. It needs a new loving owner.

Exterior:
Beryl green paintwork, very patchy and faded. Has been resprayed partially at some time in its life, but it didnt appear to be taken back past the original paint (paint is flaking away to reveal paint of the same colour). Every panel has blemishes and i dont think any are perfectly straight. Scrape down the left side affecting front and rear wings. Pressure washer scar on the front left wing. Bumpers in good condition considering the rest of the car.

In short it is a rat, many of the older set say that it has "character".

Interior:
Original blood red and cream vynil seats. Original headliner. No carpets except for rear parcel tray. Pioneer cd player with 2x 8 inch pioneer speakers in a plywood rear parcel tray all running off an Isaac fabricated mini "loom" and 12 volt marine battery. Front seat belts only.

Wheels and tyres:
Original two tone wheels painted in beryl green and a lighter green. 135s on front and 165 on rear (as per list below). Fairly filthy whitewall inserts. I also have a barely used, near perfect set of stock hubcaps as well as three ratty hubcaps.

Suspension:
Adjusters welded in front beam completed by some of the DNVK club members (VWFOOL was one of them). Suspension wound down at the back. Its very low and very cool. Newish shocks as per list below.

Engine & Gearbox:
The Engine number suggests that its a 1200cc 40hp, but the rego papers state that its 1475cc. Perhaps its been bored out to take later cylinders, i can neither confirm or deny. Runs very well, its ability to take steep hills at low speeds has impressed me from day one, it can be driven like a diesel. Sonic extractors and a single straight through muffler. Doesnt appear to be blowing smoke after startup. Drops a fair bit of oil, I just topped it up considering it ran so well otherwise. Easily returns 30mpg in suburban traffic. It runs the original 6v system.

Worn Synchros on first and second gears. Selecting second then first at the lights eliminated the 1st gear problem. Double clutching coming down into second and not rushing the 1st to 2nd change eliminates the 2nd gear problem. With a little practice i found it very easy to drive. Clutch and associated parts in excellent working condition (as per list below)

Brakes and bearings
New front bearings, inner and outer (as per list below), linings had plenty of meat when checked at the same time. Rear bearings need replacing.

Work Completed in the time i have owned it, i have reciepts for all:
- Removed and replaced Motor, Replaced 2 engine mounts, Replaced clutch cable and flex hose, Checked clutch operation (shift fork, throwout bearing, clutch and pressure plate) All in perfect condition. (4th Feb 06) Veedub Classic. $425
- New Battery (6th Feb 06) $159
- Work completed for rego:
2x 165 rear tyres fitted and balanced, 2x 135 front tyres fitted and balanced, 4x shock absorbers, Rust repair to bulkhead ($600), Greased front end, Roadworthy Certificate, Head light repair.(10 March 06) Indian Automotive. Total of $1700
- Front Wheel bearings and 2 seals (24th August 06) $120

This thing introduced me to the world of aircooled lowness, i hope that it can do the same for someone else.
Im looking for someone to love the messy old thing as much as i do, if youre interested U2U me or ring the mobile number above.
