[FS - NSW] 74 type 181
RodPenrose - January 10th, 2008 at 08:25 PM

I have all my cars cleaned and finally cleared by Aust. quarantine . Here is a 1974 thing or type 181 that is complete and is in need of a total restoration . The car is free of any rust however will need some minor body work . The floors are in good condition with a few small holes and to make it a glamour I would replace the pans but not necessary . The body is very straight with little or no filler as it has been stripped and coated with some sort of undercoat . It has no engine , transmission is there , seats are complete and need recovering , the softop frame works fine and needs a hood , bumpers are decent , windshield was cracked in transit and requires a new flat glass , side curtains are there , and the dash is original . I purchased this car in Sept 07 from the desert in California and is still left hand drive which I belive to be legal in all states . I am looking at around $ 7000 for this unique vehicle , ROD , 02-42729920 .

The thing is back on the market as the first potential buyer has pulled out of the sale . ROD , 02-42729920 .

With a restoration it could look like this one.

just for anyone who is interested I have spent quite a while looking around in the USA at 181's and have to say that what you get for your $$$$ over here is not real impresive.

So if you are thinking of buying one over in the USA yourself and importing it I would be confident in saying unless you where real lucky, and I mean real lucky then you would come out behind where you would be if you just bought this one and this would be a lot easier being it is in Australia.

I was one of those potential buyers who went to the USA looking for a cheaper option and to date I haven't even found anything worth buying yet alone shipping back. If I didn't spend all my $$$$ buying toys for my Iguana then I would jump on this.

I am in Whistler, Canada at the moment and saw a Thing in LA last week- very ratty and wanting a lot of $$$.

I too would be a prospective purchaser - but given where I am and what it cost me to get here (ie- wedding/ honeymoon etc) then I am out of the running

But I agree with Brad - would be good value.

If still for sale in a month or so when my bank recovers I will be calling - but that will not be the case.

Rod,

Is this car still for sale?

What about the running 181 you mentioned?

RodPenrose - August 28th, 2009 at 09:02 PM

I went to clean up this week and found this thing here . I would like to sell this 181 as I have another couple of cars in the US waiting for transportation next month and need the space , ROD , 02-42729920 .

A Thing with no rust. Now that makes this car extremely rare!

Cause slammed they look insane!!!
I am a bit biased i guess, my 181 runs a whole 45mm clearance from beam to the ground!!!
Before its labled not drivable, i drove it from Sydney to Hobart via Day of the VW last Nov.

Not wanting to hijack Rods ad, just saying whatever your taste, 181's are nuts cars and weather you want a sand racer, an off road adventure machine or like me, something not the same as anyone else, the king dick of slammed rats, they are fantastic in all modes. Like the other boys say, mine was bought from the states and privately imported, and Rod's is a bargin!!
