I just had a look at a convertible beetle. 1971 superbug.
Looks like not a bad job, has been cut from the bottom of the window all around, and has all been covered up.
The roofing is in ok condition, however the windows are all gone brown from the sun.
The doors have been cut, the top, from the small corner window to the attachment on the bottom side near the handle.
Starts and drives, unregistered.
Has been resprayed, needs a bit of rust fixed, and is a bit of bog in the body.
Needs a set of bumpers.
Plates welded in floor pan.
Otherwise looks pretty straight and wouldnt be hard to put on the road.
How much would you pay?

So you're saying it wouldn't be a hard job putting it back on the road. You'll need....
- new roof because of brown plastic windows
- fix rust
- possible rusty floor pan
- paint
- fix whatever oil leaks have occured
- possibly supply an engineers certifcate for the conversion as it's unregistered
Someone was advertising a Cabriolet Beetle for $15k at the Bug-In. I'd go for something original than something that will leak like a seive. If
you're really set on it though, I'd give them $300 - $500.

I wasnt planning to buy, im not entirely happy with it myself, seeing as i can get a reg'd one for $1500
And all i'd have to do is cut the roof off with a grinder!
They want $1500 for it.
Just seeing what other people think, because if it was worth it i would go for it. But i think the same as you guys looks like

Buy a registered one with engineer's papers
there is a crap more than cutting a roof off
You need to reinforce the under body
get it engineered
get a top mad up
There are plenty for sale in good nick with papers
Seriously - that aint worth $500 unless it has a brilliant motor, gearbox Porsche wheels and interior
Don't touch it, even with a barge pole.
You would be buying trouble and expense.
It's probably unregistered because it's not properly done and it needs a lot of work.
Get a registered one, which is registered as a convertible and which has an engineers report
im assuming the other states are the same but all convertables in NSW have to pass a few tests
they put it up on the hoist and put pressure in a few areas around the chassis to make sure the thing isnt gonna snap in half, most nearly do due to
rust and inadequate bracing
any vert that needs a blue slip has to be certified by an engineer which means $$
they also have to have a roll bar that is connected to the chassis bracing, the windscreen and down to the back wheel arches
70% of the convertables on the road arnt like this
most just have one roll bar that is welded to the spot where the B pillar was cut off
have a drive of one
they rattle and creak and are generally horrible to drive
not many are built well
this is why most have ended up in wrecking yards

the car will bend in the middle as all the strength has been taken away with the roof...
even beetles with rag sun roofs
have to be strenghtened around the hole...
there IS a lot of work after You grind the roof and doors off.....
You would need to be a very good welder too...

cracks in the fiberglass everywhere....
somebody did buy it ??
