Is this a German or Australian car?

I'm guessing German with the pullout fuel filler door ???

Pretty sure all the Australian ones had the interior pull handle setup, but that compliance plate in the spare wheel well would tell for sure !!!

Some one once told me all 68's were german
until VW Australia completed their tooling setup fot the new cars.

Should say on that plaque riveted near the spare tyre well.

Hmm, interesting... I hadn't heard that one before, but the two 68's I've owned were German, and so has every other 68 I've ever seen, so maybe ???

According to my Volkswagen in Australia book (great book btw) in 67 the Aust Govt had been playing silly buggers with the vehicle building/importing rules, so Volkswagen Australia switched across to just assembling CKD's in mid 67. (A Complete Knock Down is all the parts for a bug that just need assembly - even the body panels).

Towards the end of 67 the govt changed the rules again, so VW then stopped even doing CKD assembly and from Dec to Jan 68 only did rectifications(presumably fixups of 67 spec cars that failed quality for some reason). VW then went about meeting sales demand by bringing in cars 100% assembled from Germany until the govt made it's mind up, and approved their plans for manufacturing with 40-50% Australian content... which didn't happen until the end of 68.

So yeah, I think that means that almost every 68 beetle is going to be a German.

Cool eh ???
