I have a few old Beetle's lying around however to build a baja from scratch these day's can be tricky if you don't know the right people. The best way is to look for an old baja which has been registered recently, that way you only need the previous rego certificate and a road worthy to trasfer it to your name. We just finished a baja it's in the latest VWMA magazine "Matt's Baja" and that was bought as a registered baja for $1500.

I was planning to buy a registered bug, reregister in my name and then convert it. Buying a bug and then converting it to a baja would I need an engineeres certificate to get it registered?

You don't need an engineers certificate.

Vic Terry's automotive, 53 West burleigh Rd, West Burleigh. You need a blue plate compliance, not an engineers plate. Blue plates cost trillion dollars less.

Ask for Vic Terry, as long as you haven't welded the chassis, IE: THE FLOORPAN, he'll blue plate it up for ya. Think they were like $85 a plate, he has em there ready to be engraved and pop rivetted on. He can even organise the Road worthy.

Hes my best mates dad, him and i have chatted about this stuff day in day out. Blue plate ur bigger wheels, blue plate the body kit, blue plate the barwork (as long as its all bolt on)... and ur set. Just don't weld the chassis!

As for baja kits fitting beetles, They will fit anything that isn't a super bug. Any beetle that is front beam and haven't got struts on the front will take it. All bug bodies will require the angle grinder to fit the kits on though.
