Importing and converting
davesong - April 21st, 2010 at 11:01 PM

Hi All,

I am new to this site and now realise I hade two very big mistakes in the 90's; 1. sold my 57 splitty (90% done and running) for way to little and 2. sold my 54 ex-RAAF double barn door splitty to (I think his name is Bill, the old guy in Caloundra, Qld), for a steal - and no disprect intended but he definitely knew he was bending me over and rogerring me hard!! It it's condition it would be worth about 30k today and he got it for $1,500.

Anywho, fast foward 13 years and a whole lot of expereince later, I was wondering if importing a split panel from the US and 'converting' it to a 21 window would be seen as (a) sacreligious and (b) way too expensive?

Any assistance would be gratefully received.

a) You do what you want with any car you own.

b) About $3700 to import a vehicle from the USA plus 10% GST on the cost of the Vehicle (I had something arrive a few months ago). Then about $20K to $100K to do whatever you want to the van.

You could just buy a 21 window Kombi from the USA...

I think there are still plenty over there at fair prices...

Its better to have one restored over here than rusting away over there...

Wolfsburg Automotive in Victoria are doing some of these 11 window conversions to 13, 21 or 23 window versions.

It might be cheaper to see what their prices are with a locally based 'restoration' project....

Hi, Thanks for your responses.

As I am in the Middle East I was thinking of getting it restored locally so I could monitor the progress hands on.

I will start a new forum as I would be keen to hear from anyone who has thought of or completed an EV Spiltty?

Thanks,
Gary
