have spent several days searching to no avail, but have spent years deciding on my first vw purchase and i have my heart set on a caddy/rabbit pickup.
I have spoken to a few people in the scene and the general consensus is there out there, just hard to find. So who can help me out? point me in the
right direction? Willing to take one on the road or off im not really fussed. Cheers
Mitch
Good luck, I hope you're ready for a long and difficult search. These were never sold here in Australia, so they are extremely rare here, I doubt
that there are more than a handful in the whole country. I've certainly never seen one. If you are determined to own one then you may very well have
to import it yourself from overseas.
If you're willing to accept a similar vehicle as a substitute, then I would recommend the Subaru Brumby. They're very good little utes, they've got
a flat-four rumble to them so they have something in common with VWs (at a stretch) and they will be a thousand times easier to find than a Caddy.
Failing that, if you must have a watercooled VW then you'll probably be looking at an early Golf, or perhaps a Passat. In fact, if all you want is a
VW ute then there are quite a few Beetles cut down into utes, and a couple of Type 3 wagons cut down into utes as well. These home-made conversions
are more common than Caddys and will probably be a lot cheaper than importing your own!
I have seen a VW Caddy pickup in Canberra, from memory one of the VW shop owner's has one --- but I think it was heavily modified. But at least that
could be a start to find out as to importing etc.
Check with the ACT Dubbers, they may know who I am rambling on about.
get one from the UK, they were usually abused but they were quite resiliant to rusting

We have had a few cars from England come through our work, shipped, and then engineered, complianced and registered here. Look at around $7000 cost.
I saw one here in Brisbane a few days ago driving on the Western Freeway, a light blue one I think from memory,.. first one I've ever seen here in OZ. It looked great. Good luck with the search,.. hope you find one.

The Canberra one is owned by peter Shelly, Canberra VW Centre - 02 62531481 I think that is the number. He has owned it for years but doubt he wouldever sell it. He put a 1.8 20v turbo motor in it and does the odd track day in it too. Nice car though. and good luck in your search.
There are a couple haunting Hobart too.
Contact Camden GTI Performance (Matt @ 0423051737), he has one and he was trying to sell a while ago
