1960 or 1961 Split window kombi free to good home
Condor-Dino - March 12th, 2011 at 02:59 PM

Hi All,

Contact: Dean, 0400 908 346, Horsham 3400 (Vehicle at Laharum 3401), Description below, cost $0 or maybe a slab of Strongbow for the actual owner.

Free to a good home is a 1960 or 1961 Split Screen Kombi.

This is not my vehicle to sell or giveaway. I am doing a favour for an acquaintance and I can assure everyone that is is on the up and up. I checked the kombi out this morning (Sat 12/03/2011) with another enthusiast and the guy who owns it just wants to get rid of it. So it is free if someone will pick it up and take it away in one piece.

It is very complete and very rusty. The kombi is pretty much complete. The obvious exceptions are no motor and no rear bumper and no wipers. The kombi has all the lights and indicators intact. The bus is on 4 wheels. It is pretty much complete. As I said above, we have checked out the vehicle and as it is very rusty along the roof gutter line it would be a very big job to restore it and my friend and I really think it is too far gone for restoration. However, it might be of use to someone for parts.

My colleague thinks it is a 1960 or 61 model. It was painted red at some time so we think it might be a PMG model. It appears to be a panel van model originally and someone has cut in the rear windows. At one stage it had seats in the back but these were stripped out for camping. The current owner had some electrical issues and basically left it in its current position some years ago. The motor was removed for another vehicle. The white and green paint in the pictures was hand painted and it flaking off.

The vehicle is at Laharum on the north-west side of the Grampians about 3 hours west of Melbourne. I would arrange to meet you on the western highway just west of Dadswells Bridge and you can follow me to the guys house for the pickup.

I am doing this guy a favour so I would appreciate only genuine inquiries for the WHOLE vehicle. No one is interested in pulling parts of the bus.

Photos (14) to follow.

Bugger. I would have loved to roll this in my driveway and surprise my dad with it. Let me know if it doesn't sell. I assume it's already gone though.

Condor-Dino - March 13th, 2011 at 08:51 AM

Hi All,

I feel so popular. I have five people keen to pick it up who I am giving the chance in order. It looks like the Kombi will be off to northern NSW for a full restoration. For those that have contacted me, I will be in touch either way but especially if the first pickup falls through. Thank you for all the interest.

Dino.

WOW.......not often something like this comes around for free.

Ollie - March 14th, 2011 at 04:49 PM

That's amazing...

So who is the lucky bastard. Hope it is someone that doesn't already have one and not someone being greedy and is going to fix her up if possible. But then again, I guess first in wins.

Kev

Hi All, the first Northern NSW pickup has fallen through so #2 from Melbourne has a chance. Stay tuned for news.

Craig, you were going to be charged for pick up if interested

No good to me, I would have taken it and pissed everyone off by using it as a Cubby House for the kids in the back yard.

jjwebb123 - March 15th, 2011 at 05:45 PM

yep, didnt think that would last long.
But its good to see,at least so many people are keen
to give it a good home.
Long live the splitty.

vw54 - March 15th, 2011 at 07:02 PM

OK so who purchase or recieved this item ???????

type3disease - March 15th, 2011 at 11:10 PM

in this case 2nd in wins....!

no I don't have one
yes I've always wanted one
currently selling off everything including the house to live a more sustainable lifestyle as we've just had our 1st bub and down to one wage....

this is the first car I've ever asked the wife if it's ok to get...! and this one didn't technically cost us anything...!
except a few gratuities for the owner and spotter... a trailer hire, 8 hour drive, a very good mate who's lending a hand and all the coffee and food he can eat

plan is to put her back on the road... inspection will decide how 'on the road' it will be - rat, resto or hard rubbish:D

cheers ben

Condor-Dino - March 17th, 2011 at 07:51 AM

Hi All, so since Ben has outed himself, I will confirm. Type3disease will be picking the kombi up soon and and that suits the owner. The official list of "wanters" is up to 8 but Ben is keen so sorry to everyone else. I wish he had a few to giveaway.

For those that are surprised at not ebay-ing the kombi for cash, it really is very rusty and while it might be worth a couple of grand in its current state, the owner is not interested. The owner lives on a self contained block on the foothills of the Grampians and is not really interested in the money. Apparently he advertised the kombi a few years ago as a giveaway in the local paper and didn't get a phone call. He is very happy to have the kombi go to someone who will value it as it no longer has any value to him. When I confirmed the pickup and told a slab of Strongbow was coming his way, he was very happy.

Ben or I might post some photos of the pickup.

Dino.

Roof has been chopped off and replaced with one bought from volksrecycle, most of the rest of the panel repairs are done and the new owner is in process of discussing engine spec/build for it...

Amazing where and what I've been up to in three years and the Kombi again was moved onto someone more likely to restore than me...

Paint yet to be decided i think but looks like orange and white are front runners....

Will try and get some pics sorted.... And uploaded
