Then stored for about 20 years.
Registered and driven last 3 years for maybe 1 or 2 thousand klms.
Some wear and tear but very good condition.
No longer required, needs new home.
$20,000- asking would be below most restoration costs.

engine is probably 1600 twin port..?? if original..

the preheater pipe covers...
were left off by most home mechanics..

Hey,

Brisdubba and/or Dutchyvan,

Did you guys get my PM re your offers?

I have not heard from either of you.

Is there a way of seeing whether PM's actually were sent or received?

I thought this thing was solded ??

vwjon - February 18th, 2012 at 09:44 AM

has this car been converted from Left Hand Drive?

grazza7755 - February 18th, 2012 at 11:14 AM

h
No, not sold, still available

vwjon,
Yes it has been converted, not by me though and I have had it about 25 years. I assume all of these were made LHD?

vwjon - February 18th, 2012 at 11:36 AM

some were made as a RHD and these were 182's, the plate clearly states yours is a 181 (all 181's are LHD) Who ever did the conversion has done a pucker job, even the wipers have been swapped over, (new screen surround?) and the padded dash top looks like a RHD unit. a really great car.

grazza7755 - March 18th, 2012 at 05:36 PM

Just found a couple of pics of the restoration.
As per most cars for sale, all offers considered.
There aren't many of these around.

gerggl - July 30th, 2012 at 05:44 PM

Not all 181's were LHD - in Mexico they made 181's with RHD for export - mine is a factory 181 RHD which was exported to Indonesia - this was the National car there for a number of years - all were imported, mostly from Mexico!

vwo60 - July 31st, 2012 at 06:44 AM

Hi grazza7755,
I sent you two email with some questions about the car when it was for sale on carsales with the intention of purchasing it but received no replies, bought a karmann ghia instead.

grazza7755 - July 31st, 2012 at 07:47 AM

Geez, not sure what happened there!
Sorry, I always answer any enquiries.
Perhaps see you in Valla.
My apologies.

181's were left hand drive, and 182's were right hand drive. This follows the VW convention that any parts on the vehicle on the left side end in odd numbers, and any parts on the right side end in even numbers. That is of course if they are specifically handed left and right. If they are interchangeable on the right and left, or there is only one such item on the car, then they will end in odd numbers. Or, to put it another way, all parts end in an odd number except right side specific parts.

Mine is a genuine RHD 1972 which was made in Germany, but shipped to Indonesia as a CKD (Complete Knocked Down) kit in a consignment with 12 others, and assembled in Indonesia (in central Java near Solo I believe. This was the case with a number of different imported vehicles, order to avoid vehicle import tax. These days, manufacturers just build new factories "in country" to achieve the same aim, but using imported parts, so really amounts to the same thing.

There was something like 20-30,000 Safaris (Trekkers/182's/Things built in Indonesia in this way.

Being a 1972, mine also has swing axles and reduction boxes, rather than IRS as per the USA market ones built in Mexico. USA unless didn't start until 1973, earliest.

History lesson over.....

gerggl - November 12th, 2013 at 02:41 PM

Awesome ....... I have a 1976 Thing 181 RHD built in Java ... probably the same CKD as you speak of ..... I have researched the history of my car thoroughly and it has always been RHD ..... imported via Mexico hence the IRS ..... addendum to history lesson ..over

Just a bump to refesh the Kubelwagen for sale.
Need a bit more room for latest purchases.
Review the pics above and make me a reasonable offer.
Asking about $20,000-, far less than restoration costs.
