It's with much regret that I offer up my 1964 Standard Beetle, (dubbed 'Ernie' by a previous owner) For Sale.
It'll be sad to see it go, but I need something bigger. I have spent a great deal of time and money on this in the past 13 or so months of
ownership.
Much of the car is new, or reconditioned, and there is little left to do really.
Bought as a stock standard vehicle owned by a uni student, and turned into what you see now. I have a mountain of receipts for work and parts, and
I also have the original purchase receipt from new.
Please take the time to read through, so you know exactly what has gone into it.
Here is what has been done in the last 12 months:-
*Exterior (Mostly all New)*
*Airkewld Complete Lowering kit, from the US. This consists of a 4" Narrowed Ultimate Beam, narrowed torsion springs, narrowed tie rods,
2.5" Drop Spindles, shortened Doetsch Tech shocks (F&R), King and Link Pin bushes & Torsion bushes. At the same time this was installed, I
also
extended and notched the springplates, and installed new rear Springplate Bushes (This corrects toe-in, and also allows more travel from the lowered
ride height.)
*Outer Ball Joints
*Empi GT 5 Spoke Alloy Wheels and Chrome Studs. Wheels are 15x5, with Smart Car (155/50) Front, and Standard Size (165/80) Rear Tyres.
*Front & Rear Brake Cylinders
*Front & Rear Flexi Brake Hoses
*Front & Rear Wheel Bearings
*Brake Master Cylinder
*Brake Light Switch
*Fuel Tank (Rhino Lined so it won't rust!)
*Fuel Sender (As this is a Standard model, it does not have a fuel gauge from factory. I have installed the sender with the intention of hooking up a
cable
fuel gauge, but haven't done so as yet. The gauge is included in the sale, but has the original Reserve Fuel Tap still in place.)
*Empi Roof Rack
*Albert (Swan Neck) Mirrors
*Wind/Bug Deflector
*Amber Foglights
*Safety Star (Hooked up as a 3rd Brake Light)
*Ratty Reverse Light
*Genuine VW Ski Rack (I'll include a pair of ski's to go on the rack also)
*Smoked Clear Taillight Lenses
*Rear Gravel Guards
*Wiper Blades
*Headlights - Porsche Lenses, aftermarket Crystal buckets and Factory Bezels. Inside the rim has been painted in Black and White Chequers. New H4
Super White bulbs installed
*Stainless Headlight Eyebrows
*Mesh Visor
*Vent Breezies (not yet installed)
Paint was done before I got it. I believe its a Holden Barina colour, and it's a strange Purple that looks blue under certain lights. I did however
break it up
a little by adding an Ivory 2-tone through the doors, and had some Pinstriping done by Scotty Makin. The pinstriping is on the decklid, bonnet, and on
top
of the taillights and headlights. The paint has faded quite a bit, but I kinda neglected it purposely as I was after the original ratty look. I have
no doubt that
it would come up great with a polish if Shiny is your thing! There are a couple small rust bubbles on the A pillars, and the decklid is quite rusty.
Again,
as I was after a ratty look, I never did anything about it. It would be an easy repair. I have a Fibreglass 'W' Decklid for it (included also) to go
on it.
*On to the interior*
The interior has grey carpet throughout, which is in okay condition, but I had planned to renew it with a different colour eventually.
Rear seat is still original. No rips or tears. Front seats had been changed at some stage, and though they are comfortable, I would probably replace
them
with some originals, as they don't look very nice at all, in my opinion. Headrests have been removed from the seats, but will be included in the
sale.
Front and rear door cards are all brand new, and are currently being trimmed in Oatmeal Tweed with a Plaid insert. The rear Speaker Shelf is also
new and trimmed in Oatmeal Tweed. I have enough material (included) to re-trim the front and rear seats. I have a pair of front speaker kick panels I
will
include also, but are not yet mounted or trimmed. Wiring is run for front speakers though.
Stereo consists of a JVC CD Headunit with USB and AUX input, and remote. It has Sony Xplod 6x9's mounted on the rear shelf, and a 12" Sony Xplod
Sub sits underneath, powered by a Powervox amp.
It has seatbelts front and back, and a child seat restraint also.
As it's a Standard, the dash is very sparse. No glovebox lid, and the interior light block off plate is still in place. It also has the door hinge
screw covers still
in place. Hoodlining is not in the best condition, but its only the half lining in the centre section of the roof. I had planned to replace this with
Bamboo.
The stock shifter has been extended quite a bit, and has a Rubber Chicken shift knob. I know this isn't everyone's 'cup of tea' so a stock shifter
is
supplied also, in case you don't like it! It also has a pair of Empi Chrome door handles and window winders.
*Engine & Drivetrain*
As the original 1200 was severely underpowered, and tiring, I decided to replace it with a 1600 Twin Port, donated by a 73 Beetle. As it was daily
driven,
it wasn't fun trying to merge, get up to speed, and make it up hills with the old engine. The 1600 is much more driveable, and a lot more
powerful.
I started with a very good second hand Engine, and added a whole bunch of new parts. this had to be reliable for me, as it was driven not just on a
daily
basis, but driven to Port Macquarie, Brisbane, and other distances fairly often.
In the past 3 months, the motor has recieved:-
*NEW Doghouse Tinware masked and painted in Black and White Chequers.
*NEW Alternator (upgrade from the generator!)
*NEW Alternator Stand
*NEW Alternator Backing Plate
*NEW Stainless Tinware Bolts, and Nuts throughout
*NEW Billet Oil filler & Cap
*NEW Fan
*NEW Fuel Pump
*NEW 34 Pict Carby
*NEW Intake Manifold
*NEW Inlet Manifold Boots
*NEW 009 Style Vacuum Advance Dizzy
*NEW Chrome Dizzy Clamp
*NEW Spark Plugs
*NEW Gaskets throughout
*NEW J-Tubes
*NEW Thunderbird Exhaust System. I got this from the US, and sounds great!
*NEW Leads
*NEW Bosch Coil
*NEW Chrome Air Cleaner
*NEW Chrome Dipstick
*NEW Empi Alloy Degree Pulley
*NEW Chrome Alternator Pulley & Nut
*NEW Fuel lines & Filter
*NEW Clutch
*NEW Accelerator Cable
*NEW Front and Rear Trans Mounts
*NEW Axle Boots
I have also just had a good second hand gearbox installed, due to problems with the old one. It shifts well, doesn't crunch gears, and doesn't pop
out of
gear either!
It has just been serviced (and has been frequently) by Gold Coast VeeDub, and is not due for another service until 12500 miles (currently has 10000 on
the clock)
No doubt I've missed a few things, and if I have I will add to the listing
As you can see, I really put a lot into my Bug. I wanted it to look good, and drive good. I have over $7100 of receipts to reflect this. Not including
the
original Purchase Price of Ernie, and things I either misplaced/didn't get a receipt for (engine, interior trim, stereo gear, tyres to name a few)
It never fails to turn heads, and I always get complimented on how it looks. Passers by giving you the thumbs up, or taking photos as they drive by,
and I never get sick of watching people 'Punch Buggy' Each other!
I've taken home a few Trophies from various shows I've attended in this time, also.
I really hate to let it go, but with a 3 year old boy who has special needs, I simply need a bigger car.
It's very low, yes, but is fully adjustable should you want to raise it a little (or lower it if you really want!) I have the stock beam and spindles
if you want
to return it back to standard.
It is currently Registered in QLD til March. I am willing to leave the rego on it, and negotiate the terms with the buyer. Personalised Plates are
*NOT*
included. It will have standard plates attached upon sale
I am open to swaps/trades, but I do have my eye on a couple vehicles already, and would like something of the same vintage
(American/European/Whatever)
I am fairly firm on price, and if it takes a year for me to get what I'm asking, then so be it. I'm in no rush to wave goodbye.
Any questions, you can message me, or TXT 0413716710. I can't always answer calls, so if you send me your number I will call you back.
Please ask questions if you are unsure, and you are more than welcome to come take a look.
I am located on the Gold Coast, not far from Movie World at Pacific Pines
