Tyre Size
Smiley - December 5th, 2012 at 07:18 PM
Hey all.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the largest factory tyre size was offered on a Type 1 based VW vehicle?
Is it around 165/85/15?
Also, if anyone knows what tyres sizes were offered on the Country Buggy, that would be a good think to know also.
Thanks in advance.

Largest tyre offered was on the early ones; 5.00x16 - overall diameter of 678mm ish.
Next would be the 5.60x15

it depends on the width of the rim. early 4J rims came with 155/80x 15's you can just safely fit 165/80 to these.
4.5J not really much more than that.
Dunno if Oz tyre manufacturers do this but in Europe you can look at a table the manufacturer has that lets you know the max size tyre to fit to a
certain with rim and still be safe.
I mean you could get a 185/70 to fit on a 4.5J but it would be unsafe.

No they came with 5.60x15.
They never came with radials.

So are you going with the VSB14 two inch bigger rule Smiley?

Not until May 1st I don't have to.
And by then it will be approved for larger tyres.
Just want to know what I have to put it on so shut the transport department up.
So what does the Country Buggy run?? Are they larger than the 5.60x15s? Or just a more aggressive tread pattern?
And can anyone tell me what 5.60x15 converts to in radial sizes?
Also. What sized tyres did the split Beetles run on the 16" rims? Does anyone know that?

Didn't gt beetle come out factory with 6" wide wheels? Don't know what size tyre but might get you some leverage.

Crosspllies are taller, and that's what counts in NSW. There is no regulation regarding wheel diameter in NSW, only overall diameter.
