Gday all!
I'm sorry, *sigh* , but yep I like SP heads.
There you go, my grubby secret is out! Has anyone else noticed (or
even cares remotely?) that they are now bloody hard to find? I have seen them on Ebay (first question........), I have seen them from CIP1 (second
question........), and every now and then you see them 2nd hand (third question!........).
Q1. I have been told by the experts on the subject who frequent Sa&&a that the Ebay heads are of asian manufacture and therefore utterly
crap. I really don't want to go down that path, other than to say they also make brand new BMW bikes better than the Germans (fewer recalls), so I
rekn they have the technology. Is that technology applied to VW SP heads however, or is it the cheapest-is-best form of manufacture? Does anyone know
for sure? Has anyone tried them out?
Q2. CIP1 say there heads are from OEM Brazil, but I'm fairly certain they stopped making thse SP heads even in Brazil umpteen years ago. Has anyone
bought a set in the last couple of years? How was the material density and overall goodness?
Q3. Most of the "newer" SP heads are now damn near as old as me, so their 40th birthday was a while ago! If they are anything like me, these heads
also will now be feeling well and truly NOT trim and muscular! Unlike me however, is the general consensus that they are OK for a proper rebuild, or
past it? By proper, I mean phosphor-bronze seats, bronze guides, SS valves, quality retainers/collets, new studs, etc?
*sigh*
Yeah, I know. Just stop being a bloody pain and get a set of 043s or 044s and slink away into the corner again.......
They DEFINATELY have their advantages though over DP, hence the questions and info.
Please.
PS Just so you can argue with your mate at the pub next w/end, ported SP heads on a mild 1641 with Solex30 is 1/2 sec faster down the 1/4 than stock
VW 355A twin-ports............
Don't worry also love sp heads.......
Yes, I still have Single posrt heads
I don't really know why
have replaced them with heads from VW head place JAXs
in QLD [I think]
but was told they went out of business..
New heads are being made in INDIA and was told they are Good
Twin Port that is... not sure about single ports.??
don't know if there are any new ones about??
and whether South Africa or Brasil or mexico have made them
in later years...??? [in the past 15 years]

Nothing wrong with single port.
This lad does 7.6 sec passes on the strip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxIAOfU3XTU
He has machined it for 40x40 valves, running boost on 2110cc's, rekons he can fit a golf ball in his ports.
I purchased a set of reconditioned SP heads from http://www.mofoco.com, they also
machined them out for me at 39x35.5 for a turbo project in the pipe line. Came to like $600 something. Threw in a set of HD springs too.
The 'flow' restriction people talk of in the SP engines compared to the DP is said to be 'misthought' as being the head itself, when apparently
its actually the stock SP manifold.
Just thought i'd chime in and talk how you ought to be proud of your SP likings haha.
HAHA!
Onya peoples, I'M FEELIN THE LUV!!!
Anyway, yeah, the restriction is in the manifold stock. "Back-in-the-day" putting on a custom 1.3/8" manifold on a 1500 with a tweaked single 34
really woke them up. If you hate Solex's, then I tried a Mikuni 40mm bike carb that was pretty snappy too.
SP heads are hard to beat in some cases, and for me that means when it's bloody hot (it was 49*C on my shaded front porch yesterday........), and
when you like an engine that has throttle response like a bike, and excellent fuel economy.
I did also consider small-port TP heads, but apart from Mofoco 040s and Mex EFI 043s nothing really has the velocity for a little stockish motor
combined with heat capability, and neither matches the SP that well.
Guess sometimes I just feel like all these little engines aren't having much imagination thrown at them any more, so a SP port single carb mild
hotrod would be kinda cool.
I recently installed a pair of new Oem Mexican sp heads, the quality was ok, but the aluminum is definitely weaker. I very lightly bumped one of the
heads on my work bench and it bent and cracked a cooling fin!
Next time I would rather find a used German pair and have them reconditioned instead.
Aaaahh.
OK.
Thanks man. That's the exact sort of feedback I was hoping to hear.
Or not really, but anyway.
Don't be afraid to be different !!! I personally am a big fan of doing things differently

Lol that is different ! But you know what ? It's just an air pump - air
and fuel in one end, heat and noise and tractive effort out the other. There's bout a billion different ways to get he air and fuel to the combustion
chamber.
Holley 350's seem to be use pretty successfully on the draw thru turbo kits you see around.
I haven't been to any of the Alfred's runs, I used to o bits and pieces years ago when I last had a bug, and hope to get back into the club /
collective side of things once I get my new one on the road.

Lol I could but its 60km away..... Further than Alfred's !

Jax VW Heads is in Lismore, NSW.
Good source for VW heads I managed to get a set of 1300 Twin port heads which are pretty hard to come by
Cheers
Shaun
Has Jax closed down ? I thought someone on here said they had closed some time ago ?
I bought the heads 12+ months ago now; but I think he still is advertising in VWMA
ive got a set of nos ones here if your interested

I've joined the SP club with the split! Running a 1500 sp mostly stock except for the after market extractors.
What size crabs are you running on your 1500 SP?

Just checked that 34 weber doesn't look bad. might keep it a single carb for now so i'll up my carb to a 34 pict at least. Will probably be the first dub i've owned without a 009 dizzy. Only mod i'll make there is elec ing.

Sorry putting a 30 pict on instead of 34, as i have a 28 pict with a govener on the split SC at the moment. Is a SVDA elec ing worth the coin on a 1500SP?
