hi there,
just wondering as i am thinking of installing some indicators on the oval as i nearly had a few accidents as people aren't aware of the semaphore
,i was going to install some bullet type on the front and rear bumper and was wondering what type of flashing unit would i need and where to install
it in the car and how to wire it up????any instructions, or plans would be much appreciated.
cheers
Ah, I just had the fun of doing this.
I got a bosch 3 prong flasher can 2x18w. I can get you a number if you want.
It's pretty simple to do. first of all go to http://www.vintagebus.com and get
a wiring diagram for your car.
The 3 prong flasher can type have terminals designated
P,X,L
Find the cable going to your indicator switch, you want to cut this and put the can in line, so it goes something like:
Fusebox--->X terminal on can
L terminal on can--->indicator switch
P terminal on can---->indicator warning light in speedo.
Now you need to wire up the indicators themselves. You need to find the Left and Right turn indicator wires, and patch into these for your indicators.
Sorry if any of this is unclear I'm pretty crap at giving instructions.
You want to disconnect your semaphores as they will wear out with a flashing signal.
hi pat,
thanks for the reply...i've actually already have a wiring diagram from an original workshop manual that i bought a while back....sounds like fun
...and a few headackes...
That was very good Pat...
The early beetle wiring diagrams are much easier to use than the later ones which can be difficult... at least twice the number of wires.... and
switches with 5 or 6 wires etc...
You sound like You are on the way to being a VW auto electrician Pat ....
Most electrical wiring diagrams are available on the internet from:
http://www.vintagebus.com/

Well, I threw my self into the deep end with a d-i-y analogue synthesiser project a couple of years ago. But the wiring on a vw, especially a pre-68 is about 100 times simpler than modern cars.

I have mostly built Power Supplies for My Radios, as a Ham Radio operator, You are supposed to do that sort of thing.
I did build an intermittent wiper delay a few years ago, left it in the car when I sold it... Now I am going to build another one.... there are none
available now as most cars come with them, so I am going to use a timer delay with a relay and that should work... Years ago when I had My 1972 VW
type 3 Variant, I made an interior light delay that would slowly dim until it went out, people used to keep closing the door, saying the interior
light is still on.... left that in the car too... Now they are in Commodores etc.. I have also built an alarm kit (all different) of some kind for
every car I have owned and always left them in the car too....
I have a screecher alarm kit to put in My 68autobug, it mounts inside the car... and the noise level is too great to stay in the car.... I have
always thought that alarms should be inside the vehicle as no one takes any notice of the noise.... on the outside.... cheers Pat Lee
Pat,
Have You seen the 1973-75 L Beetle wiring diagrams?
They must be designed by a computer analyst... for computers to read ?? as normal people can't read them....
terrible.....
Lee
internal car alarm.... thats a great idea!
