Anti Rattle bushing for steering column
Lateral - February 23rd, 2013 at 07:21 AM

Hi Guys

I am having trouble figuring out how to install the anti rattle bushing in a 1974 steering column as I can't seem to locate a good exploded diagram of where it actually sits. Currently there is not one installed and someone else has simply wrapped some electrical tape around the column shaft!

Regards
Greg

Supers and standards use the same steering column setup, its just the length that varies.

The plastic bushing sits between the shaft and the bearing.
on a 74 there is the anti rattle bushing then a grey plastic sleeve that slips down over it before the steering wheel is fitted.

Hi Joel

Do you happen to have an exploded diagram of the 1974 steering column so I can see where everything goes ?

Greg

The 74 onwards ones are really simple.

If you havent removed the circlip and bearing from the housing its just the clear plastic bushing that sits between the bearing and the shaft then there is a grey plastic sleeve that sits over the shaft for the steering wheel to bottom out on that is about 40mm long.

The later anti rattle bushings being made out of plastic was one of VWs dumbest ideas ever.
I use the earlier metal ones in my bugs.
