Hi guys
I need to rewire the Alternator in my 1967 beetle.
(See attached photo)
The B+ terminal goes to the Start motor. Does the D+ go to the Alternator light in the dash?
Also, my alternator was not directly earthed via the Earth Screw on the side of the housing...should it be?
I also having trouble tracing the wiring from the VDO Tacho to the rear of the car. As the car was running EFI with a Wasted Spark coil setup, am I
correct in assuming that the Tacho would have been connected to the Alternator in order to get its "pulse"? If so, could the tacho therefore be
connected somewhere behind the dash?
Thanks
Regards
Greg
Have a look here

Oh and Tacho feed wire to - terminal on coil.
Tacho gets its pulse from Ignition system not charging system.
Thanks Nicko,
I was confused as I only had the wiring diagram page from the VDO Tacho and it shows that you can connect the Tacho to the Alternator and as the car
did not originally have a standard coil, I thought that it was therefore connected to the alternator.
It appears that that is only able to be done on diesel engines.
Thanks for the link, I already saw it and basically wanted confirmation.
What about the question regarding "earthing"?
Regards
Greg
Ive never seen one earthed externally using that screw. Usually it is just left the way it is. The alternator is grounded and regulated internally.
Someone more knowledgeable may chime in here and correct me but AFAIK you will be fine without an external earth.
never seen one earthed either, fibreglass fan shroud maybe?
That would make sense.
Thanks guys....
