For the life of me I cannot seem to remove the steering arm from the shaft on the steering box on a bay kombi. The nut is off but the arm will not budge from the splined shaft. Obviously it has to be off so it will fit through the hole in the chassis. I have used a 3 armed puller and the arms do not seem to want to grip. Is there a recommended way or something I'm doing wrong? I guess it's been there for 40 years. The tie rod on that arm is also stuck fast. I don't want to bash it and ruin the thread on the spline.

Do I need to break out the angle grinder and sacrifice the arm??

i used a 2 arm puller on the one i pulled apart ,once i realised it was'nt going to come apart easily, and when it did separate it went with a bang ...lol

I'm doing one today, I hope it'll come off with my Snap-On Pitman arm puller......always a lottery

Might have to Macguyver something in the shed. Have made pullers before using a couple of those hobsons plates with bolts between them to force them out. Might be the only way. Otherwise sacrifice the arm which is probably easy enough to replace.

Today's was a TIGHT one, puller maxed out and had to go for oxy heat on the arm. Went off like a gunshot when it popped. Good luck.

So went to buy a couple of pullers today. Picked up a tie rod end remover which worked a treat on the tie rods. And a pitman arm remover which.....broke! Good brand too, frame snapped clean in half so not up to the job. Will return it tomorrow for a refund.

But found out (and surprised nobody mentioned it) that you don't need to remove the arm. Only the nut. The arm then fits perfectly through the hole. Who'd have thunk it?
