Hi Baz

is it an early model [ignition switch is centre of dash
or late model with switch on the steering column??

1st.. do the dash warning lights come on with the key switch along with power to the coil and carby fuel cutoff solenoid and auto choke too..

the turning of the key should just turn the engine over - power to the solenoid on the starter motor.. ONLY

usually the 3 wires to the ignition key..
one is POWER +
other to the ignition circuit [as above]
and the last wire connects the starter solenoid to start the engine..

You may have the ignition and starter wires connected wrong
or the ignition wire not connected at all...
all to the starter circuit.. so ignition is only working with starter motor..??

Get a test light and confirm, black wire should have power when on, but by the sounds the ignition switch electrical contacts are not working properly. Can be replaced without changing the actual key/barrel assy.
