71 bug selector rod rattle
x275 - May 9th, 2013 at 08:47 PM

Hello,

I have just replaced my rubber selector shaft coupling that connects between the box and selector rod with a new solid billet piece. I now have a rattle that sounds as though the selector rod is knocking against something in the tunnel..
I have removed the gear stick and from what I can see there
is a brass bush through an eyelet type bracket that holds the rod up towards the stick but nothing else down there.
I've moved the selector rod up and down, side to side and there doesn't feel like there is any horizontal or vertical movement.
The rattle occurs while i'm driving, if i hold the stick with a little bit of pressure it goes away.
The rattle isn't there in neutral. It did make a slight rattle before I changed the coupling at the back, but the solid coupling seems to have magnified the sound.

It changes gears fine apart form 3rd to 2nd but I believe this to be the second gear syncro..

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,
Conan

There is a bushing that goes in to the eyelet near the gear shift itself. If you replace that it should fix the problem for you. It means taking out the shift rod though.

Mines a super bug, I marked my spring plate and set it back down where it came from, perhaps I should try move it more to left and see if that resolves my grind when I down shift into 2nd..

Thanks for the advice. Where is the best place to get a quality bush ?

Cheers,

Depends where the Oz vendor gets em from. Ring Micks or Vintage for the selector rod front bush and retainer clip.

Any of the UK or USA shops can order it online and depending on Oz post could be here in a week :)
