Hi guys,
I was having trouble on idle and at RPM on cold Canberra mornings - it would bang and pop all the way to work. (It's a stock 1600 SP, single 30 pict
carb)
I figured that I might have had a blocked heat riser so took the carb manifold off to check. Heat riser was definitely blocked, but the outlets on the
exhaust had been welded up so even a good clean manifold would have been no good!
I picked up a Tri-Mill GT exhaust from the Nationals today which has the outlets for the heat risers so I should be good. However, I haven't seen a
single exhaust (extractor) for sale with those little 'cups' that direct the heat into the heater boxes. There is one on each side and takes the air
from the fan, down the hoses/pipes and connects this into the heater boxes.
How do I get a pair onto my new exhaust? Do you just take the old ones and bend off the clamps around the side, refit and reclamp?
Thanks for the advice - I'm learning every day!
Cheers, Tim.
Tim,
if its the small heater chamber that goes around the pipe on the stock system you wont find an aftermarket set of headers with them.
One way around this is get some of the foil heater hose (more heat resistant) and do some tight bends around the pipe to get to the heater box inlet.
You might have to oval the profile in places. Use the normal thin steel tube joiners with hose clamps where it transits through the horizontal
shroud.
Its a fddle but it works.
.
the other option is to do some masterful sheet metal work and modify the chambers to suit. If you are ditching the old stock system just cut the
exhaust pipe and slide the chambers off and go from there.

I made the joiners from the heater boxes to the foil hoses from baked bean cans..
cut and tapered and soldered up..
works fine.. no leaks..
and Yes You need the heat risers in the winter mornings..lol
I have seen these pieces for sale recently somewhere..
just a peice of pipe large at one end and smaller at the other..
they have been for sale in the USA for years..
why the heaters weren't made to fit the hoses???
the foil is close to the exhaust pipe on My extractors but hasn't burnt thru..
SILASTIC brand of silicone is handy as it can withstand the temperature of the exhaust.. never burns or falls off..
also use it on exhaust and heatriser gaskets..
