air box for dual carbs
Bizarre - June 2nd, 2013 at 08:57 PM

Does anyone run an airbox set up for dual carbs??

Something like the CSP set up??

My car lives outside 24/7 and I have always had trouble over the years with popping and farting, blocked jets and the sort.
Anyway - I made up a sheet that blocked off the vents on a late deck lid. A bit of light plastic that hangs down and effectively covers the filters when parked.
I have number plate and tail light cut outs so heaps of air is coming in.

Anyway - since doing this for the last 3 weeks, it has been pissing down at times in Sydney - and not a pop or fart. Perfect.

So - my troubles is definitely water related and I need to make up some sort of air box for my Dells.

Do filter socks protect any better for water??

Hi

A guy on here with a Baja made some sort of air box using Commodore air boxes I think, it looked like a good idea.

You could fit turbo tops to the air cleaners and run a pod on each end or run into a central box.

Didn't Barls make one from an Excel air box aswell I seem to recall.

I started making one from the stock Beetle air box to shut the induction roar from my old webers.
just needs a second 2" outlet on the bottom and ducting to each side.

Are you still using IDFs?
the turbo hats you can get for them make excellent air box connectors.

Yeah, still running DRLAs.
It isn't the noise, it's the water from living outside.

Going to try and get some turbo hats and go from there.

Yeah - only looking on my phone at the moment bu it looks like the CSP set up.

Would like that but really can't justify the price.

Thanks - that is exactly what i was thinking
I have flicked him a question or 2

Wondering if anyone knows what the box is?
Looks like a 1600 but the intake seems more rounded??

The oil vapour hose connects in a different spot on my Beetle air cleaner, however that would be easy to change, so I reckon it is a Beetle one

Joel - June 3rd, 2013 at 08:07 PM

Its a stock 74-76 Beetle one, just facing arse about with the snout removed.

Bizarre - June 3rd, 2013 at 08:10 PM

yeah - it was the lack of snout that threw me

mmm... have to start having a play

Joel - June 3rd, 2013 at 08:31 PM

It's similar to what I was building but leaving the snout with a functioning preheat flap setup intact.

Hi

Maybe you could use a twin carb Kombi air box?

Steve

Craig Torrens - June 4th, 2013 at 09:51 AM

Barry, I have a 76 airbox if you need one

narumi - June 6th, 2013 at 12:48 AM

the idf i pulled off of alfa romeo 33 has the 90 degree bend hat thing that goes to
the center filter box like your previous post.
I have a set in the shed but never bothered trying anything

Bizarre - June 6th, 2013 at 09:21 AM

There is some reason the Alfa box doesn't work.
Or so I have been told.
Think it has to do with the "tops" going the wrong way or something.

Would appreciate if you could have a look and confirm.

Barry, i think the alfa tops will hit the fanshroud....as they are come off perpendicular to the webers

Bizarre - June 6th, 2013 at 09:41 PM

Ahhh.............. that's the reason

Maybe a flat fan

modnrod - June 6th, 2013 at 10:31 PM

Can I add an unproven idea that I'm going to try myself for my Beetle?
If it works, then could you please tell me?

Pretty simple, stacks on your Dells/Webers/Expensive-Italian-fuel-stuffer-upperers, then use flex tubing (seal it up to the stacks with foam and cable ties, done deal) up to an airbox from a Beetle/Commodore/Skyline/whatever, that mounts to the fan shroud just above the alternator, same as the pic above.
Light, quiet, cheap filter. Worth thinking along those lines maybe?
