So, I dont know how, but I somehow managed to absolutely obliterate my front left wheel bearing in 8 weeks...

It has scored the surface that the bearing rests on, on the spindle itself.

My query is, given that the bearing has an inner sleeve, will the scores in the surface of the spindle cause any issues if I just install a new bearing? Or will I need to smooth the surface out first?

The grooves arent very deep at all, but are present.

I'd say as long as it sits flush and firm still it'll be ok, but for insurance dob a bit of Loctite bearing retainer fluid (or similar) on the shaft-to-inner race contact surface to prevent the inner race spinning on the spindle. the scores and any attempts to smooth it will remove more spindle material, reducing that interferance/press fit for the bearing (not ideal).

You don't want that inner race spinning.

Cheers, Allbones One would suggest that you may have over-tightened the stub axle lock nuts. Refer to VW manual, you must have easy movement in the thrust washer once lock nuts are set.
