Getting superbug ready for the road after an extended "rest"? The engine starts and runs on auto choke but after a couple of minutes the revs drop and the car stalls. Any suggestions?

Where can I get a carby kit? I am on the central coast nsw.

Also, in the photo pointed out by the screw driver, there is a vacuum port? I can't find a loose tube. What is this for?

pretty sure that port goes off to the late air filter to control the hot air flap

But basically - block it off

Will dig a photo up

As for the carb - have you "tuned" it yet?

Otherwise my guess is an air leak that is compensated by rich running of the choke

Hi

The blue car has it wrong. That hose from the air filter should go to a port on the inlet manifold. That port is for a dual vacuum advance unit.

Dazz, just block the port as your running a single vacuum advance dizzy, btw it looks you have a non alternator fuel pump on the motor and your carb could be a non alternator one as well so your accelerator pump linkage could be hitting the alternator.

Check your idle jet and check for air leaks on the manifold.

It's all good, it's got the alternator style linkage ;)

That port can be used for the air filter preheat diaphragm.
The really late cars like 75-76 were setup like that as they didnt have the lower port, but the earlier ones use the port on the manifold under the carb flange.

Try pulling the idle jet out and make sure theres no crap in it.
often happens after they sit for a while.
they'll run fine on auto choke but stall out once it opens up.

Mine was doing that, found it was sucking air through the rubber boot were the manifold joins to the alloy twin manifold. Also found the base of the carbie and the face on the manifold needed a flatten out, it was sucking air there as well. Once you get it going spray a bit of CRC or something around the joints, if the revs pickup she's suckin air. Have fun

Sounds like a vacuum leak. When the choke is on... it increases the vacuum, such that if you have a vacuum leak its enough to still draw fuel out of the carby.

As mentioned above, i'd check those manifold boots. This has caught me out before

Update,

It is a pict34.

Followed instructions on the link above and the car died.

After I worked out it was out of fuel I put some in and started again.
Set it up as per the website and now have some kind of idle but it is still
a bit rough and requires a dab of throttle to keep it alive at times and it is
backfiring a bit too. Will check valve clearances and change plugs when
I pull the engine out soon.

Just want to thank you guys for all the help. This site seems to have a lack of
haters that are abundant on other forums. Well done administrators!
