They are a good cheap way to do it.
There is another great option for splitty's (beetle should work too).
The vertical cuts / slices in the dash work perfectly for the fitting of a silicon Nurses Fob Watch. I got one on ebay for $5 and put it in there. Worked a treat.

Pm sent but these are the pics of mine I did earlier this year. No longer have it or the bus. Took about 4 or 5 hours to do the way I wanted it. I've seen some much simpler jobs but I wanted it to look factory and like it was supposed to be there. If I was to do it again I'd do it slightly different to reduce the time it took to make. At the time I didn't want to permanently damage either the clock or the dash.

The last kombi clock I sold went for $250 so not exactly cheap if you can even find one. For me the dash came from a parts car so cost/owed me nothing and the clock cost next to nothing so it was worth it. I was trying to minimise irreversible damage to both parts in case it didn't work so could have done it in a couple of hours or less otherwise.

The clock is still only an option in the lowlight. Would look more factory with the lowlight dash but still good.

and at the end of the day we all love tinkering around with ours buses...so i don't think time really comes into it, unless you're looking at doing a 'resto' for profit.

If I did another one I'd probably halve that time. Do it differently. I got the idea online just decided to build a better mousetrap so to speak.

there is a guy in Switzerland who collects NOS vw clocks. I got mine from him.
