VW auto adjustments
tweety - October 7th, 2013 at 09:18 PM

Touch wood my type 3 auto in my trike has survived 44 years now likely without an overhaul. That says something.

I do have one issue. The auto, especially going uphill at around 70kph starts hunting 2nd to 3rd to 2nd to 3rd. I've tried adjusting the solonoid screw from the vacuum with limited success. The top screw on the auto box - am hesistant touching this, could be band adjustment.

Anyone have any idea how to stop this hunting problem? Are there any VW automatic transmission specialists still alive? lol

Aaron Roberts / 20Bvw is the only guy that comes to mind...

One manual says nothing on this fault, but the other one says:-
"...Cause: Restriction between air cleaner and air distributor (fuel injection). Remedy: -Free restriction or renew air cleaner."
No other causes are listed.
This could suggest that the problem is vacuum-signal related. On carb models, the vacuum is taken from the balance pipe between the two carbs, so presumably there is a strong vacuum available. Don't know where vac is taken from FI models, but the Remedy above may suggest something...
