Are these conrods strong enough
Camo - October 30th, 2013 at 05:16 PM

Hi all,

I bought this motor about 4 years ago and was told it had CB Performance H Beam rods. Well I have just pulled the motor down and guess what, not H beams.

The rods in it ware VW and appear to be clearance for stroker, linished and balanced. How much horsepower do you think these rods would take. Please remember, I am now going EFI Turbo.

I probably will end up buying H-Beams, but just curious on your thoughts re strength of these.

Thanks, Kev

P.S. I was also told it was a CB crank, but who knows. How can I tell?

Berg discusses:

150-200 hp with success. > or = to 82mm stroke crank = not soo good due to angle and weakening of rods for clearancing.

Great work Chris, thanks for that. Now I know the answer.

Cheers, Kev

Dave, I understand what you are saying but looking at the barrels they don't appear to have done a lot of kilometers going off the hone marks.

I think will sell off these barrels, pistons and rods soon.

Kev, honing looks good but rods a bit too clearanced, if you are serious about running anything more than 12psi boost, 5.5" h beams and thick wall 92s or 90.5s. Depending on cam you may be able to stick with what you got.

If they need reconditioning you would be better off buying a new set, I just bought a set of these to try, measured up well.

Nothing wrong with the rods, just wasn't sure if they will stand up to turbo boost. I might be better off selling this as a long motor as it is fine in naturally aspirated and is a good torque motor and starting another build from scratch with the parts I want so I can add my turbo. Not sure which path I will go down yet.

vwo60 - thanks for the link.

I think that you would of been better buying a complete turn key EFI turbo motor from the states and selling your motor as a goer,

Thanks Ian :lol::lol::lol::lol:

I still might put this back together and sell as a 2180cc long motor as it is perfectly good for a natuarally aspirated motor for someone. I have done just over 2000km in two years of my car being on the road and never had a problem with it. And then I could start from scratch with new case, rods, crank etc. Just need to hide the costs from the wife.
