does/has anyone used wheel adaptors?
VWFOOL - October 7th, 2002 at 12:02 PM

i understand some ppl may be against the use of wheel adaptors, and i know they are illegal, just wondering if anyone has used them before and if they had any commments or info about them, where they got them, etc?
thanks for your help

I have never used them, but as far as I know, they are for sale and used in many countries. They were legal in South Aust in the 60s & 70s, not sure now. They are still available in the UK... and probably still legal... I have never read anywhere of failures....:thumb

Are you talking about the wheel adaptors for the rims?
When I purchased my '67 Beetle about 2.5 years ago, they had a set of adaptors on them. I took them off to make way for a set of Dragway Mags. I have them sittin in the shed. If you are interested in them, let me know

I wouldnt use the ones in the first pic... there pressed steel and i dont trust them.

VVDS are similar to the ones in the second pic they are 4 stud to 5 stud VW

Yes, they are definitely illegal, they increase your track by too much and, due to the problems of them breaking, they have been banned. For what the better ones would cost you, you can have your hubs redrilled, or fit components from a later make. I'm sure all three options would require an engineer's certificate.

As for "I've never read about them breaking-" you haven't read much, even the crazy yanks will warn you that they break (there simply isn't enough purchase in the adaptor plate for the studs.)

yeah i wouldnt trust the US ones in the top pic, but those UK built ones would be good. i think they increase the track by 1cm, or maybe 1 inch, i hav read both measurements.
so ur saying VVDS hav those in stock now?
i will call them tomorrow...
has anyone else used these things?
70autostick, wen u say fit components from a latter make, wat do u mean? i hav 4 stud wanting to go 5.
is it possible for me to go back to 5 by any other means?
i hav IRS welded in back of the oval and ball joint front end with 4 stud discs.
is there anything that can be done?
i hav my original Oval pan though, no chassis conversion.

thanks guys
