Building a 2276. need help on supliers of parts.
splat - December 17th, 2013 at 08:11 PM

Gday. Newbie here.

Im looking at building a 2276 and was wondering on who could help me with parts in Australia. Ive got some parts from Vollks.com but was wandering if Cip1 was any good? Who in Australia is a good supplier?

Any info would be great or even a link to an old post.

Cheers

I suggest Rod.

I got a 2276 from Rod. very happy

Seriously, rod is the only guy to talk to.

If you are building the engine yourself you will save a reasonable amount importing the parts yourself, as long as you know what you are buying, I have just bought enough parts to build a 2054 from DRD racing heads in the states, he sends them using USPS and the freight cost is reasonable, just factor the freight into the overall cost of the item weather it is from the US or Australia, I have found some of the freight costs quoted here quite expensive, my aluminium case was $1300 AUS delivered, this also include main and big end bearings.

Bear in mind that buying from overseas will make it difficult (usually impossible ) for refunds on warranty issues or incorrect parts.
What if, for example, you discover an air bubble in the combustion chamber in one of your new heads. It has happened.
Buying locally (Australia ) may be dearer, but it gives you a better chance if something goes wrong.
Can be a bit of a gamble.

vwo60 - December 20th, 2013 at 05:35 PM

In fifteen years of importing parts I have never had a issue, pick up the phone and talk to the shop overseas and establish a repour, plenty of issues have happened here with parts purchased from Australian resellers without a good outcome..

Stanley - December 20th, 2013 at 08:26 PM

If you must buy OS try Pierside Parts...I've never had an issue with them.

Craig Torrens - December 20th, 2013 at 08:49 PM

I bought a part from a leading QLD supplier for $275............I have ordered the same part today from a OS supplier and its costing me $85. And they wonder why we don't buy local.

vwo60 - December 20th, 2013 at 08:53 PM

exactly

Performance Upholstery - December 21st, 2013 at 12:03 AM

I have done the sums on the comparison of buying the same parts from rod and pierside, costwise it showed up the same....

Interesting you talk about DRD as an example as I tossed up between buying a pair of CB oval port heads off Rod and a set of DRD L6's for a few weeks and eventually went with the DRD CNC L6's as I thought they would be amazing.
They look good, but their not mind blowing.
I have an fairly fundamental issue with the fact that the CNC match ported manifolds are not aligned with the inlets on the heads so there is a 1-2mm step at the bottom when looking down the manifold which tells me there is no checking of his own product when things are packaged.
I'm not confident I won't find more problems with the heads when I start building the motor.

Darren was responsive to the issue at first but he has done nothing about it after over 2 months and now he wont answer emails so I guess it's an additional cost for me to factor into the total cost to get them sorted over here.

I wouldn't use him again or tell anyone else to use him if he can't get his own product perfect before it's sent out.

It's a gamble and I feel the smaller guys think they can just blow us off.

Everything else DRD sells is Scat and 'his' cams are actually Steve Long Racing cams.

Rod Penrose has all the Scat and AA products here for the same price once you factor in postage.

Talk to Rod Penrose as he knows what parts/engine combo's work and what don't.

I have used DRD and never has a problem.
A mate has just had a 2276 built with one of Darrens kits and again not a problem.

I was just on Rods website and he sells those cases for $80.00 less than you paid. I will spend my money in Australia and with our forum sponsors

I guess I'm one of guys who didn't get the product they paid for and is now being ignored. It's such a basic mistake on his behalf I though he would have just shipped another pair and be done with it.
There seem to be a few on the Samba he hasn't dealt with very well as well.

No one gives a warranty, but for a guy new to the scene someone like Rod could put together a complete 2276 with a set of 42x37.5 cnc heads, a K8 or Web 86b cam and all the AA (or scat) parts drd resells and at least have a supplier who would run it in and dyno it before it gets shipped.

Can you tell I've got the shits with DRD? :)

fish26 - December 23rd, 2013 at 07:09 PM

I didn't get that impression at all Pete, we just had a set of CB Los Panchitos with most of the same issues we discussed but for the landed price they are good value considering a bit of massaging will go into them to get right, seems cnc ported heads are initially cheaper to buy because of the large quick production run and machine limitations.

Having paid for match ported manifolds being 2mm out is a total no no and Darren should sort that shit out quick smart.

Otherwise never had any issues with US stuff especially CB Performance except the Panchitos, but I half expected that.

vwo60 - December 23rd, 2013 at 07:36 PM

Never had a issue with any parts from overseas, when the dollar was higher it was a lot cheaper, will not take to long for parts bought in Australia to go up proportional to the drop in the dollar then the case will not be cheaper, if you read my post the case came with steel backed main bearing, big end bearings and was machined for a sand seal and supplied with the seal, you did not mention Rods cost of shipping, please add this to the cost as well. over most Australian resellers years ago,

matberry - December 24th, 2013 at 12:11 AM

I have never had a match port manifold that I'm happy with 'out-of-the-box' using CB 044's, Los-Panchitos and Scat heads. It's due to the large mounting holes in the manifolds allowing movement in the connection. A sleeving job is required to remidy the problem.
It comes down to what your prepared to assemble.

Good luck with your build.

Craig Torrens - December 24th, 2013 at 08:11 AM

Sleeving is a great and easy mod to do, but Pete's DRD "match ported" manifolds have a different port shape to the DRD head's inlet port........sleeving the manifold stud holes won't fix that !!!!

Super1302 - December 26th, 2013 at 07:55 PM

i have never seen matched port manifolds offered with los panchitos (looking at the CB site) unless you order to suit them. i did my own matching porting for these heads. you ask, you get i believe, i asked for 650 springs and they had to machine extra on my Los Panchitos to fit them.... Rod is good
