Simple question. I am trying to restore a beetle to as close as possible to original. Original parts are obvioulsy not still available but some of the
manufacturers are still out there.
Is there a resource which helps identify who the OE suppliers were?
For example it might be ATE for brakes, Bosch for electrics etc.
I have searched but I don't seem to find anything.
Or am I doomed to individually looking for identifying marks on each part I need to replace?
Yes
I don't believe such a list exists.
Like Headlamps were either VW Bosch or Hella and earlier ones even Hassia.
VW did change OE parts at times.. I have read somewhere where they used a different part [say a bush made from different material] between chassis
number XXXX & XXXX..
I think it may have been in a UK or USA VW Magazine years ago..
They would be from the original German factory records I believe..
Very little if anything remains of the Volkswagen Australasia factory records.
Just imagine that the factory is running short of a bush ?? from their normal supplier, so they order 1000 bushes made from a slightly different
material from another supplier. or Bolts that were 2mm longer than normal.. etc..
As Beetles were made from imported and Australian made parts which I believe the OE supplier would have varied all the time.
Maybe they had 2-3 or more suppliers of the one part..
Parts stamped with VW - like coils-Generators-relays headlamp glass etc
must have been made by an OE manufacturer I Believe..
but used the VW symbol. ??
but Bosch Hella etc used their own numbers and Brand Name on Parts..
so, who made the parts that had VW stamped on them?? and no other identifying marks..
Anyway, that sort of answers Your question... but then Concours cars are supposed to be how they left the factory.. so, maybe there are some sort of
lists out there to make sure the car is correct for that year... This is usually with older cars.. like a 1952 or 55 beetle.. etc..
but whether it actually says who made what in that year???
I don't know.. Maybe it was easier to identify older parts and makers??
I've always thought so long as it looks correct for that model...
LEE
What year Beetle ??
