Power Pulley vs Stock Sized
CC Super Bug - February 3rd, 2014 at 02:36 PM

Was looking for an alloy pulley to dress up the old girls engine bay (1600 TP).
Have seen a 6 inch "Power Pulley" advertised. Measured my stock steel one and is 17.5 cm edge to edge, about 6.89 inches according to Siri.
Does this mean I have to change my belt size?
Or is the 6 inch measurement where the belt seats in the groove?
Newby VW owner here, go gentle on me :)

There's some nice ones out there, but be aware.

Power pulley = less rpm for the fan = less cooling.

None ideal for a stock run-about. if you plan on being in the higher rpm's constantly (ie:track work) then its ok, but say stop/start traffic and idle that fan won't be pumping out the required cooling.

You can get blinging pulleys without going smaller. :tu:

to answer your question you do need a smaller belt. http://vwparts.aircooled.net/SearchResults.asp?Search=fan+belt

Cheers for the info. Will stick with stock size 'bling' pulley

Stick with OG pulley.

Bling pulleys are show not go.
Have seen too many problems from cracking, to wrong degree markings, to causing leaks.

Get some chrome paint and do it properly.

Where is Lee's photostream when you need it?
Stock pulley dresses up ok with some shiny paint.

In all honesty, there are good ones out there too, if you wanna dress it up. Go for a reputable supplier, and don't buy the cheapest because chances are it could be the nastiest. Avoid EMPI.

All in all, its like telling that young girl that wants to upgrade her cotton bloomers to G-bangers that she shouldn't wear that thong because its polyester and not cotton. Looks hot though, and can always change back to the cotton bloomers if there is such an issue.

I just love that analogy Chris. :-)

Haha, thanks. Old Bertha looks OK in her bloomers, but wouldn't mind seeing her in a G. Will do some more research!
