Leaking Swing Axle Gearbox?
Lateral - April 7th, 2014 at 03:06 PM

Hi Guys

I'm trying to track down the source of oil in the gearbox bell housing.

It doesn't smell like gearbox oil and the main seal looks ok.

I have posted a few shots of the oil and of what looks like a "line" from either the casting of the gearbox housing or is some sort of crack.

Your comments are appreciated.

Regards
Greg

Admitedly, it looks like a crack, however, you said it was not gearbox oil. Therefore, it can only come from the engine. Rear main seal.

I've had a look at a few other photos of other swing axles via Google and they all seem to have this type of "blemish"....

I think you will find that this is a casting mark,as the oil is black it has to be engine oil also there is no signs of it running down the transmission case. Even though the seal may look good it may be the main bearing moving in the case and the oil leaks past .

Thanks Grumble,

I'll check the main seal.

When the seal is out check the rear main bearing for play in the case and also replace the o ring inside the flywheel.
