tweety - July 29th, 2014 at 05:34 PM

If you guys go to non VW conversions two spots below this section to see my new rebuild thread you will find on the second post a problem with a newly obtained automatic transaxle in that one has mounting points on the diff housing and one doenst. cant anyone shead light on why??

The auto with the flange around the drive flanges and without the bellhousing mounts is the earlier transmission, the later transmission has the bellhousing mounts which are not used on the type 3 but are on the 411/412.

Not the best picture but it shows the mounts in a 412

Thanks guys. I assume I can swap over the diff housing with diff eg are thy interchangable? so want the old diff with the newly acquired auto?
I'm also confused. Is the 411/412 the type 4? and the 411 went from 1968 to 1972 - isnt that when the type 3 was also being sold?

Yes. They were VW's first 4 door air cooled and were to replace the Type 3.

Accordiing o the posts on ,y thread in non VW conversions, the diff ratio on the type 4 sedan is 3.9:1 compared to the type 3 at 3.67:1....about 200 less revs at 100kph for the type 3.
Does anyone know of the worlkload swapping the diffs if one had both transaxles on benches. and if there would be problems?
