Case question for engine builders
hulbyw - September 24th, 2014 at 11:11 PM

Wondering how much better a twin relief case is compared to my single relief case that came with my '68 Beetle. I will be building a mild 1776 and for a whole lot of reasons it will be less aggravation to re use my original single relief case than the newer twin relief case with new engine number. So is the DR case that much better?Any advice would be welcome
Cheers...........Wayne

Depends on the case
Generally I led to believe a single relief is worse. Especially the H cases.

That said Matt Berry built a stroker for Bluey out of a single relief.

Maybe pm Matt. I'm sure he will give you the good oil

While a duel relief is preferred for a mild 1776 your existing case would be fine. Just take the time to check it thoroughly or have someone check it for you.

The later dual relief cases are said to be a bit stronger than the single relief but apart from that it's down to the oil cooler.

The dual relief is meant to prevent the possibility of the oil cooler bursting due to high oil pressure when the oil is cold and only let it thru the cooler once up to temperature and hence thinner in viscosity.

Never tried retro fitting a doghouse cooler to a single relief case so not sure if they'd fit but the later dog house cooler allows better cooling of the number 3 cylinder compared to the early cooler position.

Thanks. I do have a doghouse cooler to fit. I was under the impression the galleries were larger on the DR case but I may be wrong

I believe the single has 8 mm galleries and the dual has 10mm

you sould check our the 2007 build that matty built for bluey, theres some many little tricks to make a good engine of any size, one surprising aspect of bljuey's engine is i does not run a cooler in the fan shroud.it has well thought out cooling sysrem,I would e asking lots of questions and planning out whefe to spend ,ya bucks.Warrick would be a good place to lurk and ask tne questions cause i've seen $1200 1776 rebuild that wasn't wlrth two knobs of goat poo.
