Handbrake Cable for wide 1500Type 3 Gear Box in an Early Beetle
mossman - October 14th, 2014 at 12:51 PM

My early model Baja (1960) has a wide type 3 swing axle gearbox. The wider axles would stretch the standard beetle handbrake cables so I had installed longer cable with longer sheathes which worked perfectly. Both cable and sheathes appear to be ~15mm longer than the standard beetle.

When I bought them a couple of decades ago they were easy to find. So easy that I dont know what vw model they would be from. I assumed a type 3. Now I am having trouble sourcing a replacment cable.

I am about to try an L Bug Cable but I am unsure if the cable will be long enough.

Any advice on a suitable handbrake cable replacmenet would be appreciated.

I have a few type 3 & various other cables,if you can give me some measurements I can check the lengths of what I have and may be able to get you out of trouble.A pm is easier as I don't always keep checking posts that I have read.
Cheers Les

Try using these guys to find the info you need as for most the cables they sell they give the lengths of cable and conduit. VW Heritage.com.au

Or measure yours and send em an email. They'll quickly check their record for the exact or closest matching item.

Once you know which model n year the cable is from you can order it from wherever you like :)

ring VVDS 02-9789-1777 and measure the length of the outer b4 hand

Thanks for your help guys. I ended up going to Custom Vee Dub and Pete sorted a pair of cables for me. They are from a superbug. The outer was perfect but with the cables being slightly shorter they were a bit fiddlye to install. All good now with plently of room to stretch.
