1600 Engine to 1800 Box?
Kuchster - November 8th, 2014 at 10:01 PM

What is necessary to bolt a 1600 engine case to a 1800 5 rib box?
Which clutch? Shortening the input shaft??

Hey mate. You will need to pull the input shaft and machine it down about 10-15mm. I can't remember for certain how much. Just measure how far proud it sits of the edge bellhousing where the engine case bolts on, and then compare it to a bug box. The difference is how much you will have to cut it back.
You can just run a stock bug clutch and pressure plate.

Mate you don't need to do any thing the 1600 and 1800 gear boxes use the same length input shaft and the bell housing has the same offset and you just use your stock 1600 clutch. You only need to change the input shaft and bell housing when fitting a 1600 to a 2 litre gear box like I have

You need to either change the input shaft or machine it down like I mentioned. Cause the Type 4 engines have a longer input shaft. So the 1800 box will need to have this done.

Not sure what smiley is talking about but I've fitted both a 1600 and a 1800 to my duel cab with a 1600 single port and never changed the input shaft many people told me they were different lengths but they are not as long as you use the 1800 or 1600 bell housings but the 2 litre is defenetly longer and needs changing let me know if you need some messurements I've got 3 boxes in the shed the only thing I can think of is that you have a 2 litre box and not a 1800

Well I had to machine mine down, and it is definitely a 5-rib 1800 box. So take some measurements of what you have and make sure it fits correctly.

I've got a 2ltr 6 rib box that I would like to put into my lowlight behind my 1600 twin port motor, my question is do I have to change the input shaft, or is it a case of shortening it? Also i know that the bell housing won't mate up to the 1600, so what bell housing do I use?

Any help would be appreciated.

Mats.

I changed my input shaft over from the 1600 box to the 1800 one as the length of the input shaft is different . Both where Kombi boxes in my 73 Kombi running a 1600 twin port .

Smiley is onto it, type 4 engine should have a longer input shaft in the box, so 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0 litre box's all had a longer input shaft, 2.0 being the longest as they have extra long to suit the deeper bell, which also needs a different starter

Hey Paul, was there a big difference in the way the car drives? ie slower take off and higher top end etc?
