Wrong Generator?? 1500 beetle
BeigeSav1969 - November 19th, 2014 at 05:55 PM

Geez two threads in the one week from me. Hoping some one can help me out here.

I'm restoring my wife's 69 beetle, not doing too much engine wise so it's been pulled out given a new muffler, belt distributor, plugs, oil and a good clean. We noticed while fitting the new belt that the generator doesn't line up with the main pulley.

Now this car has a fair history of being mucked around with engine wise, I've been informed a family friend rebuilt it's original 1500 using a 1600 case? Obviously the Generator has been changed or is there something else I'm missing?

So my question is it the wrong generator for this engine, or is something else not right here.

As always any help or opinions greatly appreciated.

That is the correct gen for a 68-70 bug, 71-73 had the stud style terminals.

The part that isnt correct is the pulley on it, judging by the wrong hub its either a 6volt pulley or an aftermarket pulley which comes as no surprise that it doesnt line up.

Someone may have a good orginal for you.

Edit, just for referecnce here's an original 12 volt pulley, notice how the hub is dished outwards in the center instead of inwards like yours.

Hey Joel,

Thanks very much for that, much appreciated mate. Obviously a lot cheaper to replace the pulley over the gen.

Thanks again, Ryan
