Measuring tools

So I'm getting into this engine building caper, getting parts and a plan together. Is there anyone who rents or loans the measuring equipment required for many of the blue printing tasks? Depth mic, outside micrometers etc?

I'm based in sydney, don't need them just yet, but will do in a couple of months.

You are welcome to borrow some of mine mate, since the last time I lent them out I have since attached them to a boomerang

Certain things you lend and others you do not, best to own your own so you know that they have not been dropped or damaged remdering them inactuate. Some people could break a crow bar in a sand box.

Oh how eloquently true :)

for the OP - These days you can pick up a usable OD micrometer online for under $100. Only thing that I'd suggest checking at an engineers is the calibrating plug as they can be inaccurately machined.

Thanks guys. I'm a little concerned with the accuracy of the eBay options. And then when you start pricing the instruments you get a bit of a shock. If it was a change of career I would invest in them.

I was intrigued so tested a $30 fleabay item with a more expensive one and measured exactly the same but the calibrating slug was 0.03mm out so once properly calibrated it works great. Means I don't mind it getting dirty. :)
