Power across the coil?
Old Hutcho - March 20th, 2015 at 04:26 PM

Did a search, couldnt find anything relevant so here goes. Changed some jets in carbs. Fired the engine, it caughta nd stopped. Nothing since. No spark. Magnaspark ignition with magnaspark coil. Both + and - sides of the coilare live with ignition on. My feeble electrical logic tells me that there is a short in the distributor, but if it is an electronic one (which it is) without points then what can short. In a normal dissy I can understand if the points are closed then there is your short. Really dont understand this. I have not altered the wiring terminals since I installed it last year and its run faultlessly. Have checked all wires for fit and bare wires etc. Nothing. Advice please. Has anybody ad one of these just fail out of the blue?

Best thing to do is fit a 10amp switch in either the coil +ve or -ve leads and then with the centre dizzy lead held 1mm from a good earth point on the engine you open and close the switch. If the coil is OK it will fire a spark every time the switch is opened.

As for the electronics they really aren't any different from normal points. It's just that it's s transistor acting as the switch instead of the mechanical points.
