Hi all.
I was inches away from getting my 26mm Shadek oil pump, coz my stock 1600 one has a bit more lash between the gears than I'd like, but then thought
to myself methinks......
"Why not just get a CB Maxipump with the 2-outlet cover instead?"
Good question.
I've heard web rumours about the CB pumps being Shadek anyway, and I can't really see much difference between a sharp 90* angle at the pump or at
the fitting screwed into the case. It would save me hammering the pulley tin out a bit and make life a bit easier, but are the alloy covers up to the
job? (no fine ally paste in the oil). Do the fittings leak at the cover? Will I spin a rod bearing if I rev my single Solex 1600 past 7000 using a
Maxipump?
Even a 26mm pump will empty the sump eventually, as rpm climbs,
but that being said, every bend or restriction will create a pressure drop and reduction in flow to the bearings.
So long as you radius the holes in those CB pumps, they work fine for most things,
but the ones I have seen were not quite as nice as the Schadek.
Other than OEM pumps, the Schadek is pretty good.
You know what to look for and modify in those passages if you go for the
CB one.
Most CB's have a keyed drive gear which, while unnecessary for most things, is pretty cool.
If you could port, blue print and anodise a 21mm pump, that should be more than enough for most things.
Gday Dave.
Funny you should mention the 21mm pump. I have an old one in really good nick, so I had thought about it, matches my flat cam too. Was only a little
bit hesitant due to the bigger galleries of the 1600 and all the extra oil lines I was considering.
I'm going to check different fittings at the hydraulics place next time I'm in Perth too, measure different fittings for fit under the pulley tin
and over the pump cover, etc.
I should just turn the OCD down a notch or two probably and bolt the damn thing up.
I'm running a maxi pump on my 1916cc and it has been fine, although I did clearance and port the holes so there are no restrictions (or minimal) like Mr Dangerous has said, but I also pressed the keyed shaft through a few more mill as I wasn't happy with the engagement in the cam, as with all aftermarket vw parts modify the crap out of everything so it fits...!!
