I have an old 1500 Beetle that I want to get on the road, i bought it some time back and it is missing tinware at the sides of the motor and possibly the back?i am not sure. I have been told the tinware is needed for cooling and my question is A. is it nescessary and B does the motor have to be removed to put the tinware in or can it be fitted with the engine already in the car?
Any advice would be welcome as I am not very mechanically minded.

yes they need to be there.
some pieces can be fitted in the car but its easier with the motor out.

The piece that you car is missing is not part of the engine tinware, is part of the bodywork and it is welded into position.
Your car appears to have been modified for some reason?

you will need to track down a car the same model and remove them, then weld them into yours. then you can fit the rubber seal than goes around the engine.

Both Hookeys and Autocraft in the UK make good quality repro items. Don't bother with the chinese/brazilian crap you can buy in Oz.

Steve Hooky even uses Transglobal Express if asked nicely and this is the cheapest shipping you can get from the UK.

Do you need them? Well a) they add structural strength to the rear qtr and bumper mounting area plus b) they fill the gap and have the correct channel in them to fit the tinware seal to keep the hot air below the engine.

Without seperating the cool and hot air you will end up overheating your engine or at least have it running hotter than it should and this will warp head, warp barrels, overheat the oil and cause bearing, piston, valve etc etc wear in the engine.

So fitting em would be a good idea
