Hi all,
For years I have had issues with my 1961 Beetle accelerator pedal system. The thin rod that goes through pedal cluster bends due to extra load of
twin carbs etc. And Yes, I had it gusseted to try and strengthen it and it still bends.
I would like to know what complete separate pedal and cable systems people have used and if they were any good. Please remember this is not for a
race car so I want something that still looks pleasing to the eye and doesn't have some huge cable sitting inches above the carpet.
Thanks, Kev
Can you fit a later pedal set, they don't bend, well I haven't bent one yet, maybe you need more boost so that you don't need to floor it as
much.
I run a Morse cable in my car through a dedicated 1/2 stainless tube

Maybe someone can confirm if a late cluster will fit, if it does get it chromed, you know what they say" if it don't go chrome it or chrome wont get you home

Kev, I had a similar support [in No.8 Beetle] on the stock arm, to stop flexing. If you make it with a separate clamp [like a con-rod], the stock arm
can stay as is.
Mine had the stock pedal, but I replaced the crummy link with a pair of 6mm rod ends joined up. The floor under the pedal can be plated also. The
cable should be OK. Make sure there is a means of limiting the travel AT THE PEDAL, so there is no strain on the cable etc. when you have your big
foot planted.
If I still had the car I would post a photo.
I made this using a pedal assembly from a Toyota Hiace, with a bit of fabrication it turned into this, The cable runs under fuel tank and back through the lower bulk head on the pan in line with the original tube in the tunnel, no springs are used at the pedal end and light one's on the carbs, it allows you to heel and toe and has greater travel than the original resalting in a better feel. I made the cable and carry a spare in the car, it has done many miles and is still the first cable.

How's the heel toe with that set up? Doesn't look very comfortable.
I have no issues with the heal and toe and have driven the car over long distance and the position is comfortable for me, set it up to suit yourself like I have.
