Wanted to post this question on the board but it won't let me.
Well
i have a 57 oval that I bought 90% restored. It has a 12 Volt wiper motor, a later Carb that requires 12 Volt to run the Auto Choke, but the Generator
is only outputing the required amounts for a 6V battery. (Standard Generator)
Has anyone converted one of these things to 12 Volt?
It has a 36 hp moter so the Generator Mount is part of the block.
I know most of you think the 6V system is fine, but seeing though most of the work is done for the 12V Sys I would like to go in that direction.
If not should I get an original Carb with manual choke?
I'm here in California, so I don't know how difficult it is to find these parts there.
I know that the early porshe speedsters and 365's used a generator that is the same size as a 36horse generator. It is 12 volt and is a direct
bolt on. (you need to get the 12 volt regulator as well) My buddy put one on his judson supercharged 36 and it works great.
Kymco also used to rewind 6 volt 36 horse generators for 12 volts, but I'm not sure if they still do it.
You might want to check with any alternator rebuilding shop to see if they will rewind the generator for 12 volt. The shop near my home says that they
could do it.
someone else posted here a while ago saying there was a shop in brissy that rewinds them to 12 volt:thumb

i have a brazilian bosch generator that is the smaller diameter but is 12v... weird
Hi Che , is the generator the same size as a 6v one?
I have the same question as Baja Wes. I want to put a 36hp back in my oval at some time , but want to keep the 12 volts for a decent stereo and lights
and just about every other thing.
I remember reading in an old Aust VW magazine about getting the 6V rewired for 12V too. Has any one done this here?
yeah i just went out to measure it and its 90mm i diameter, my 63 bug was converted to 12v by the previous owner so i have never had any 6v parts on my car except for starter and some bulbs. U can also use a porsche 356 generator which is 12v i think, it looks like a 6v gen.
