Sheered swing axle
jiminy_cricket - January 6th, 2017 at 10:28 PM

I recently had a sheered axle - at the nut! Car was sitting for 3 days when it happened. I found the nut about 2 meters from the car - so clearly popped off with some energy. Axles are about 18 months old. I think form Pierside. Engine out put is 120HP and not driven that hard.

Interesting...

How lucky you are to have found that nut when you did. Just imagine how bad that sort of a failure could have been. Dave

Well it could be one of three things.

1) Poor quality driveshaft
2) Overtorqued nut
3) Not enough spreading of the torque over the shafts thread as there seems very little thread protruding from the end of the nut. Minimum of 1.5 thread pitch spare above the nut.
