How long is a beetle irs axle? 17.5"?
Cheers
Raf
415.5 mm overall or 405.3 circlip to circlip
Ok thanks. Too short
What's as close as possible to 17.5" or slightly longer?
Raf
what are you attempting to do ??
Hi Dave
I am building a 550 replica with 914 box, engine and trailing arms
The 914 axles are too long at 505mm. I have 465mm between flanges so anything close to 465mm i will be able to make it work with some spacers
The Kombi ones seem to be the right length but the cv diameter is 100mm so won't fit in the trailing arm. Need 90mm cv
Any suggestions would be appreciated
Kombis use the same splines as a Beetle or Type 3
I will have a look around and see what might fit
forgot to say the spline area is a little longer on Kombi axles which won't cause any issues
Hi Steve, I have beetle and kombi axles in front of me and they are different. Beetle has fine splines (33) and 90cm CV joint OD. While the kombi is
28 splines and 100mm CV joint OD. They are not interchangeable
Maybe there are different axles for different years?
Anyway what I need is axles that are as close as possible to 18 3/8" with CV joints that are 90mm OD. Dave let me know if you have something that
suits?
Thanks a lot
Had a similar problem with my Spyder. Dave Mawer made a pair of driveshafts to suit...they weren't cheap though.
Make sure you allow for 'plunge and dive', Raf. You should have grabbed my car when you had the chance.
Yes Greg, I should've
Hey mate. Not sure if this is any help.

Going by this you need early Bus IRS axles, at 18 and 3/4". They are a touch too long but I'm sure that you could have them faced to the correct
length in a lathe.
If you end up losing the circlip groove you can just drill and tap the end of the axle for a cap screw. This is what I run on my Baja.

Cheers mate, thanks for that
I dont know what axles you have but I know few people who have fitted Kombi CVs to to Beetle axles by turning out the centre of the CVs
