I'm hoping for some help in identifying the rear drums on my Ghia.

I was going to replace them and ordered a pair online.
The new ones are a fair bit narrower and don't work well with the backing plates.
I originally thought they may be Type 3 but the supplier measured & they seem to be wider again! (top pic)

Any advice appreciated!

They look like early type 3 to me

You can start by looking for the cast-in part number
on your old drums.

311 prefix is the type 3 early drum that Dave speaks about
and is approx. 230 diameter but wider 40 then 45mm shoes.

Later they went larger diameter too, which are the ones every one wants.

Type 3's had a longer snout on the drum though,
to match their longer axle splines.

...so unless yours have been machined, it is unlikely to be those.

Most early 1960's type 1 drums have a 113 part number
and a 30mm wide shoe,
with the same 230 diameter,
but 1965 to 1967 had a different drum
and late 1967(?) went to a 40mm wide shoe.

That 65 to 67 drumis 113 501 615D....which I think is the one you had,
but check the width of your shoes,
and the part number on your drums!

Yours may still be 30mm wide shoe
with the later 65 to 67drum.

Some suppliers sell only the later 615D drum since it fits the earlier cars too.


Either way, the star shaped casting on your original drums is later than 1961.

I think it's a 300 number on the drum. Can't post a pic at the moment.

I also meant to mention that we measured the shoes at 39-40mm wide

I have a drum here, identical in appearance to yours, that has a C suffix number.(113 501 615C)
It appears to be the same as the one you need. (and the same as the "D" from CIP1.

Of interest, I have used them with the 40mm shoes, and the associated 4 stud backing plates,
but depending on how the shoe is bonded, they may need slight clearance in the inside corner.
