Leaking gearbox
njg02 - November 26th, 2017 at 09:00 PM

Good evening.
71 super. all stripped. Thinking about sand blasting the chassis, or not.
Lots of oil on the frame horns and into the tunnel. I'm thinking from the gearbox, because it is leaking while sitting on the floor.
I've never stripped a box. But can I pull it apart and just do gaskets?
Can I do it with a basic set of shed tools or do I get someone to do the bearings etc?
Not much online to do with pulling a gearbox apart.
Thanks.
Neil

I would suggest giving it to someone who understands the VW transmissions, it is easy to get into trouble as there are special tools to set the selectors etc particularly if there is a bearing or 2 that need replacing. Replacing the gaskets is straightforward but you need tools for the pin ion nut etc.

Thanks grumble.
I talked with a local guy and I'll just do all the seals that I can without doing anything silly.
He even said it was specialised and he normally sends them away.

In most of these boxes the rear nmainshaft bearing is buggered, this can be replaced if necessary without dismantling the box with a fair bit of care and ingenuity but can go pear shaped if you do not know what you are doing.
Good luck
