A mate and I have just bought a 1970 Baja Bug nicely advanced by members of this forum and just needing that latter stages completed by us.
Having read forums about the fun that can be had dealing with the DOT on Bajas, we are eager to track down an Engineer here on the Sunshine Coast who
can guide us through the Baja compliance process, before we get too far. Any advice would be great, thanks.
I am up on the Sunshine Coast but do not use anybody here, We us an engineer at Capalaba , Earl Gilchrist, he specializes in ICV's and has a wealth of knowledge, 0417 229 723 .
There are no guidelines for "rust repair" in qld. It Just say's it must be done to an acceptable standard. So if your beetle meets all the rwc requirements bumpers, headlites at the correct location, and it looks a baja it shouldnt be a problem. And for yourengineer on the noth coast. KV'S FABRICATION he does a lot of prostreet drag stuff.Ask kv about his rust repar issues with DOT.
Thank you vwo60, will speak to Earl.
Thank you also coletrickle, rust is all ok, probably more thinking about seats mounts/ seat belts for chassis prep prior to sandblast and powder coat
and then suspension/ wheels when we get it back and get into putting it back together. We'll also chat to KV.
Many thanks!
You do NOT need a engineer for a Baja in Qld. What you do need is a "letter of approval" from QT to fit the kit. Comply with that, and that's it!
Pm me for more info.
Fittting Seats or Engine conversions ect will need blue plates as any other car but have nothing to do with the actual getting registed in Qld.
Many thanks Bone, much appreciated.
Hi, I've been tinkering away on my Baja for 4 1/2 years and finally have my own shed after having it in storage, and have made really good progress
since Xmas with rebuild of the front beam, steering, discs, wheels, tyres, and rear hubs, discs, wheels and tyres, trans and engine prep.
I will add some photos in the next few weeks.
As the project was 3rd owner when it came to me and in a thousand pieces I am seeking local contacts (ideally Sunshine Coast) who may be able to
assist with-
(1) access to a (circa) 1970 Beetle that I can photograph as a record of what of the original Bug needs to go where (and what I am missing and need to
get),
(2) a local Baja conversion that I can also have a good look at in person, just to understand how best to fit the kit,
(3) anyone who paired a Subaru engine (ideally an EJ20 turbo from a WRX - mine is a 2000, which was running and driving before I removed it, have also
had the wiring harness cut down professionally). I have the adapter plate, new clutch, starter etc all sorted. I have cooling system, ideally
reinstatement of the Subaru AC, exhaust, and Bug + Subaru wiring all ahead of me so any access to a finished one would be great...
(4) experience with use of a 6 rib Kombi into Bug box, so I can understand impacts on trans mount/ half shaft lenghts etc. I have Kombi stub axles and
CVs and a Subarugears engine mount.
Any advice would be really appreciated, thanks in advance,
Lee
Welcome back Lee and glad to hear you are making good progress now.
I am sure a couple of people will speak up that can help you on the sunny coast.
