What motor is this?
Bizarre - April 5th, 2019 at 06:32 AM
Can someone help me id this motor
Engine number is 3478100
Part? number is 0113101102B13
My look ups is that it would be a 36HP 1960 motor but it has a bolt on genny stand
But looking at it I would have said 1200 40HP?

In Australia, transporters came out with the 40hp motor in 1960, well before the Beetle.
Maybe this could explain the strange number?

Could have been an early non fresh air motor that has been converted over the years to fresh air fan housing

Take the flywheel off and check if it's a "bastard" engine from a 60 Type 2.
They have a different rear seal, and the thrust main bearing is in the middle bearing position, not behind the flywheel.
Let's know, I've only ever seen one.

Thanks Tony I have been trying to remember what the difference in the "Bastard 40hp" was, I remember crankshaft breakages and a few other problems
but the thrust bearing slipped my memory. We did quite a few of the KDA exchange engines back in the latter part of the 1960's at the dealership and
towed dozens of kombi's to Taree from
O 'Sullivans Gap in the holidays. One christmas we had about 6 or 7 kombis behind the workshop with engines apart waiting for the engine
reconditioners to come back from the break, we ran a couple of power cords out, they used our tanks and dam for water and had a shower in our
facilities when the workshop was open.
Probably not the best Christmas for them but as much as we could help in the circumstances.

Where I got confused was this table here
http://www.vw-resource.com/engine_number.html
has the 36 HP being a engine number starting with 1,2 or 3
5 to 9 is 40HP
and why no engine numbers starting with a 4?

Barry the Australian engine numbering system was unique and doesn't always match up with other countries. I have some paperwork at home somewhere but
it will take a while to locate it but that engine definitely is not a 36hp.
