Reco of T IV Heads
kombiluva - October 15th, 2002 at 07:23 PM

I am looking at doing a reco on some square port T IV Air cooled heads.
Has anyone had any dealings with these little suckers!
Is there any gains to make (HP) over these heads with the stock T IV heads??

I am aware that the Heater boxes are different as is the inlet manifolds; does anyone know of the MAX size of valves that can be put in both heads??

I am thinking of building up a 2270cc motor for my Bus and was looking at the Square port heads as an option.

Does anyone recommend a good place to get heads reconditioned here in Sydney!!

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards
Mick

i have heard that the square exhaust port heads flow better than the earlier ones

a good place is Unlimited Head Jobs in Ashfield, Sydney. (cool name :) )

they aren't the cheapest place around but Vintage Vee Dub Supplies, V-force and a couple of other aircooled VW shops get them to do their heads. They do quality work

I currently have my 2L heads (with 1800 valves being installed) in at Conti Engines at Bribie Island (Gary has vast experience with type IV engines - especially for aircrafts).

I have heard the square exhaust ports may perform better however you are more limited for exhaust systems (headers/extractors).

Not sure what the largest valves you can install, I know that the porsche 914 size valves are quite large but the price of these suckers jump up quite a bit compared to stock 1800 valves. The stroker crank for the 2270 won't be cheap (you probably already know this!). Check out http://www.shoptalkforums.com  in the Type4 forum for heaps more info.

Bizarre - October 16th, 2002 at 08:31 AM

Saw a set of 2L square port heads the other day with 50mm & 40mm valves :o

Das
isnt a 2275 still a 71 crank but 102 jugs or something?

Out of my league - i am sticking to stock on the bus.
Had my heads for both my 1776 (040's) and my square port 2L heads done at Unlimited. 3 angle jobbie and exhaust valves.
Yeah - no complaints at all. At least on the 1776. Havent fired the bus ......... yet!

As with the exhaust. Yeah heater boxes "can" be a bit hard to come buy but not that hard.

Give Richard a call at V Force. 9743 1247 buses and hot T4's are a staple diet for him

I have a set of square port heads 4 sale, they need rebuilding, as one has a loose inlet seat.

also have a set of rough square port heater boxes too if any one needs a set.

Hutcho - October 16th, 2002 at 09:51 PM

Dave,
Are these heads, besides the loose seat, in good rebuildable nick? Eg, are there any cracks between the valve ports.
Im looking for a good set of 1.8 (preferably) or 2.0 heads. How much are you wanting for yours?

Thanks,
Steve Hutchinson.

The 2270 runs a 78.4mm stroke with 96mm barrels and pistons.

Check out this American site for a guy who is well known in type IV circles (Jake Raby) - I bought his how to rebuild a type IV video - it has been extremely useful for a first time engine builder (I am building a 2L for my 63 bug).

Ahhh.....Jake (dont mention the Progressive) Raby

Yeah.....he likes them T4's eh!

Wasnt sure what the set up was....he like them 96's too.

Are you getting 96's or are you boring a set if 94's?

So you reckon his videos are wirth the $$$? He certainly wears his hart on his sleve eh!
Apparently he has sold a couple of motors to people here.

Dasdubber - October 17th, 2002 at 12:51 PM

I haven't decided about p&c's yet. I priced the 96's from the states and the cost adds up pretty quick. I will most likely either use stock 94s (possibly rehone the barrels and just buys the pistons as reportedly the new cylinders are not as good as german originals - there is disagreement of course), or bore the stock 94 barrels out and use a slightly oversize piston (not quite 96) - I have to find out more info from Guy at Harding European who told me about this option.

The video was worth it in my mind, with shipping I think it cost me around A$70- 80 to get here from http://www.aircooled.net

Useful especially if you haven't had experience with type IVs before (like me!).

I emailed Jake a few times and he was very helpful although obviously being in the business he pushed his kits but at about US$4K it was way to dear for me!

kombiluva - October 17th, 2002 at 02:44 PM

I have been surfing the net and have found a few options when it comes to P&C sets.
Have a look at
http://www.lnengineering.com/
They are pushing an aluminium finned barrel with a steel barrel as an insert.

Also look at the pistons that they are pushing.

Those guys there have their stuff in one sock.......a little expensive, good quality, extra cooling would be great in this hot country of ours.

A good motor is an investment.....build it right the first time you will reap the rewards......longitivity, better value for your money per Klm driven. Not something that has to be re built in 100,000 Klm-look at the heads and keep going!

On a different note, has anyone thought of using some barrels from an air cooled aircraft motor?? Made of aluminium might have to do some machine work to align head studs through fins.....could work out cheaper then the US ones!

I would wait a little while before handing over 2 truck loads of $$ for Shad's nikkies.

Call me paranoid/cheap/what ever but there is a story or 2 going round that there were one or two problems with his first set. Jake Raby swares by these things.......but hey.......the guy is 27! Not saying you gotta be old for experience but.........

Just a real long way for warranty. Shad/Jake/John C are real good guys but they dont cover shipping in there warranty. Once you ship it here, back again then out here again.....even a set of nikkies start to look cheap!

Ceramic coating has been round for a long time. Maybe have a look at that.
Jake is big time into cryo treating his motors and swears by it........another option to look into.

Still there are some real good T4 gurus here.......... Some Aussies have been building hot T4's long before the likes of JR etc etc :thumb

Blue,
I know that the Aussie TIV scene is strong and the experiance that is around is second to none when it comes to building TIV motors.

Just have to have a look around Sydney, Coffs, The Gong and other places for some 2.6L TIV getting along.

I have currently a 2L motor with Haltech injection, ect, ect. Built by a craftsman. I am currently investigating the possibility of going for 2.2 L with possible Turbo....aka HELLBUS by Chris Frasier.
Going for the square port heads, 78mm crank, LE Engineering P&C (the cheap ones) and standard rods, rockers, GBerg Cm Pushrods.
Will have to do a little more investigation to finalise all the parts. Aluminium Barrels with the steel insert seems to be the choice, Porche have used that concept for years till they went all Aluminium.

I could always buy 2 sets of Porche Barrels and then split them up to make 3 sets for other TIV engine builders!

Interested???

Cheers

If you give Gary a call at Conti Engines, he produces and sells a big bore kit (I think 103mm) for type 4s I think aluminium finned. They are not cheap (I think around $2500) but don't quote me on this!

Just another option if you want to go big.

KruizinKombi - October 18th, 2002 at 11:31 PM

$2500??? Holy Crap!!!

type82e - October 19th, 2002 at 08:56 AM

holy cow!!
you can get a full reco 2 ltr from conti for about $2000

Dasdubber - October 19th, 2002 at 11:56 AM

The recon price is right Marcel, but remember that is using stock 94 p&c's which are off the shelf readily available items. The 103s are manufactured here especially for the application and using aluminium fins etc.

As I said don't quote me on the $2500 but I am pretty sure they are in that vicinity, I just remember asking him and then quickly coming to the decision that I would not be using 103s!
