ok doing the wiring on my fasty i have solved the problem of burning out fuses in the indicator fuse
i cant solve this:
earth on steering wheel connected and no blown fuses earth on the battery disconnected touch the earth on the battery and the horn blares at full ball
disconnect wire at steering whel (even with horn arm off) and connect battery earth and touch earth and its blares.
it has constant power with ingnition on is this meant to be?
i have tried another horn also?
cheers

Your horn has power going to it ALL the time...
it should only be with the ignition on, this is correct... but the Horn is being earthed out somewhere. Usually its the horn button or horn ring
under the steering wheel..
If You disconnect the wire going to the steering wheel the Horn should go off (stop)...
If Not (horn keeps going) You have a short circuit somewhere. It maybe the wire going thru the steering column... replace this wire.... easy with
the tank out!!
IF the Horn does go off (stops), when You disconnect the steering wheel.... You have a short in the steering wheel... usually the copper ring under
the VW steering wheel - this wears out after many years and the copper sometimes breaks off and shorts out the horn.... You can buy replacement copper
rings....
This IS using VW Horns..... the VW system will NOT work with horns with only One connection.....
I hope this is of some help.... Lee

I have had prob with the wire running thru the column. Just as it exits the insulation cracked and there u go...if you think its hard sorting out a VW horn (htey have the little insulating arm thing) try getting a Klaxon not to blow your head off while under the car. lino, hose and a coke bottle helped me there:o ahhh oooga
Check that the rubber grommets are in place were the wires come out of the body before they connect to the horn. If the grommet has been missing for a while edge of the hole can rub thru the wire insulation and ground the horn. Making it go beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee....................
ok i sorta fixed it its not blarring and only comes on when i hit the horn button(arm) but it will work when the ignition is off so i dont know?
will it effect the wiring in any way??
cheers

it should work with the ignition off.
In the 60s & 70s most other cars Horns DID work without the ignition on....
VW seemed to be the one out.... but maybe they thought to stop the horn going off by itself with no one in the car and flattening the battery, it was
easier to have it work Only with the ignition ON...
The VW horn is insulated and has the two terminals where most others at that time had only one terminal , the Horn itself was earthed. I think most
Japanese cars now have insulated two terminal horns.
