Some motor parts hot & cold
duncombemu - September 9th, 2003 at 11:08 PM

My Type 1 1600 is runnig very badly indeed. This is what's happening. It starts and idels, but won't rev without breaking down, spitting, spluttering, farting and coughing. If you put it into gear and try and take off, it stalls. The weird thing is, it'll warm up, but only the 'J' pipe on cylinder 3 is hot and the rest of the exhaust system is cold. Can someone explain what's going on?
Regards,
Mark

the 'J' pipe on the intake or the exhaust header? Could be a leaking exhaust pipe or you could be running on not a lot of cylinders...
welcome to the club of non working flat4's!

look for my tech post on a 'coughing and farting engine' theres quite a bit that everyone has contributed to.... hope it helps you!

sounds like lack of cylinders to me. when it runs on four it goes real good too. i was running on 3 for about 6 months when i got my first dub. amazing what 25% more power does :D
if you're running on one.... it won't even move the car.:thumb

check distributor rotor, distributor cap, leads, plugs, lead to plug connection, lead to dist. cap connection etc

To quote a well known dubber "its always electrical"
